Missouri Compromise (1820)

Summary: The Missouri Compromise was mainly about the balance of the states and how the countries stayed at peace Missouri was admitted into the state as a slave state but we needed a free state to create a balance which caused the creation of Maine.

The North benefitted the most from this event due to the Louisiana territory having no slavery except Missouri

I feel it was very beneficial and made the country more peaceful and led up to the Civil War slowly.

Manifest Destiny of 1844

Summary: After the election of James Polk, Americans began to believe in manifesting, and as they believed in it, the U.S started gaining a lot of territory.

Both: Both the north and the south benefited from this because the whole country gained land

Personal feelings: I believe this was the drive that led the Us to get as big as it is.

Growth of Sectionalism (1850)

Summary: This represents Americans being extremely loyal to their section of the country. The south had its slavery, the northwest had farmers, and the northeast had the industrial economy.

Neither: The division of both regions doesn't benefit either because either reason doesn't gain anything.

Personal feelings: I believe the division is unnecessary because there is no strength without unity.

Mexican-American war (Apr 25, 1846 – Feb 2, 1848)

Summary: The American-Mexican war revolved around James. K. Polk tried to pay for Texas from Mexico, which ended up in a war that caused Mexico to give up 1/3 of its territory

including Nevada, California, Utah, Mexico City, and Arizona

Both regions benefited because it added more land and also boosted the economy.

I felt like it benefited the the USA and made it better overall and people misjudged America it led to the Civil War due to regions doing to regions having to determine free states and slave states.

Popular Sovereignty (1850)

Summary: This concept refers to letting the popular vote determine if the Utah and New Mexico territories would be free or slave states.

South: The South benefited from this because the territories were in the South, which meant they could send people to the state to influence the vote.

Personal feelings: I believe that it isn't fair that the South can send people into the territory to influence the vote.

The Compromise 1850

Summary: This compromise of 1850 permitted California as a free state while establishing popular sovereignty for other territories supporting the fugitive slave act.

The South benefited from this due to escaping slaves and returning to the old slave states which brought more slaves and more labor.

I believe this event led to the Civil War due to slaves being able to return to their owners and brought about the division of the country.

Dred Scott (1857)

Summary: The Dred Scott case was mainly about a black man named Dred Scot who stumbled upon free territory. He sued Sanford but was declined because, technically, black people were not citizens.

This benefited the South due to the understanding black slaves did not have citizenship and abused civil rights.

This led to the Civil War due to abolitionists having taken anger due to the disrespected and uncivil needs of black people not having citizenship and making it harder for black people to be free truly.

Kansas and Nebraska Act (1854)

Summary: In this act, because of the new fugitive slave act, the Nebraska territory was split into Kansas and Nebraska, and popular sovereignty was imposed on both territories.

Both: I believe it gave territory to both the north and the south

Personal feelings: I believe the territory didn't need to be spilt.

John Brown's Raid (1859)

Summary: This white abolitionist who believed god chose him tried to launch a slave revolt, but no slave joined his cause. He was then captured and hanged.

South: They had reason to increase their control over their slaves.

Personal feelings: I believe it was stupid of him to do that.

Election of Abraham Lincoln(1860)

Summary: Due to the election of Abraham Lincoln and his being an abolitionist he was a supporter of ending slavery which caused the South to succeed in the union.

This benefited the North due to slavery ending but also could have benefited the South by being independent.

This was a major start of the civil war due to the south leaving and causing tons of conflict.
