Even using how the form of the portrait can be more revealing of the artist and their self and their perceptions than of their subject. I decided to use oil pastels because I like how you can get very vibrant colour payoff with them. Again drawing from Georgia O’Keeffe’s use of vibrant colour. ‘Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small it takes time - we haven't time - and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.’ - This quote from O’Keeffe also inspired me to think about how something small like a plant could represent a space.

I did this by using a piece of cardboard and a knife, etching scratches and markings into cardboard based off of my sketch. Using lots rough and random lines to echo how real desire lines are formed. I liked especially in Pineapple Bud, the use of complementary colours to draw focus to the plant, create unity in colour. Particularly the colour of the background which is not naturalistic in sharp contrast to the naturalistic colours of the plant.

Initially I planned to draw a lot more leaves but decided when doing the piece that the composition would become to busy and lose its focus. If I did this project again I find a plant that was more concise and compact to create a more united focus.
