Homework is a tricky topic. We either love it, hate it, or are some where in between. Homework is a tool to help deepen the understanding of the content learned. It is important for the content to be previewed before actually diving into a subject. This allows students to wrap their head around the idea and also access their schema. Homework is to be assigned after students have a good grasp on the content they have learned. This allows them to take what they have learned inside the classroom and use higher order thinking skills outside of the classroom to understand and work the problem. Homework is to be done outside of the classroom. Homework helps in increasing speed, fluency, and accuracy when performing a process or skill.

Technology can definitely enhance this element to the benefit of the teacher and the student. To me this basically using the flipped classroom approach. This allows students to view different tutorials and learning videos before they move on to the next tasks. This allows students who understand the content or concept to move forward and continue working. Students who are struggling or need help with then have the opportunity to work one on one with the teacher or in a small group. After meeting or being able to move on, students will also use technology to show they understand the concept they are working on. They can record themselves doing the task that was asked of them. This also allows students to record themselves while they walk us through the process of solving the problem.

One tip I have, is implementing this into Math. I currently do this in my classroom. Students start with a learning video or videos that they are able to watch as many times as needed. Students who understand the content and are ready to move on, start a mini project (like homework) based on the standard they learned in the video. The students who do not understand the concept are able to meet one-on-one or in a small or larger group then move on to the mini project. Students must record themselves working out the problem so I can see their process and if they are really understanding the content. This must be graded before they are able to move on.
