"Glorious" by Macklemore is a rap song that came out in July, 2017. The song feature the vocals of Skyler Grey and is in Macklemore's "Gemini" album. The speaker in "Glorious" is Macklemore who is trying to tell the audience that the key to living a happy and fulfilling life is through leaving a positive impact on the world. The lyrics use the appeals of pathos and ethos to display this message. The video also uses the appeals of pathos and ethos, but the video doesn't display this message. The message in the video tries to align with the lyrics but they differ in a way.

As I stated earlier, Macklemore is the speaker throughout the whole song. He is trying to get his message across about his life and what he has accomplished. This song was made to reflect on his success and what he has done with his life. This would be the occasion of the piece and why it was made. The audience is anyone that is dissatisfied with themselves and wants to live a happy life. The purpose of this song is to tell us about the life Macklemore has lived and how he believes he has lived a good life. I believe the subject is all about living a happy and fulfilling life. Finding a passion and something you love to do is fulfilling and Macklemore did this with music. Finally the tone, the tone is upbeat and happy because Macklemore believes he has lived a good life and he feels "glorious" about this.

The music video takes place in California and the camera follows Macklemore and his grandma around for her 100th birthday. Macklemore came down from Seattle to surprise his grandma and celebrate her birthday with her. They are seen doing many fun things throughout the day. Some of the activities include: egging a house, doing karaoke, grilling out, buying clothes, and watching the sunset over a lake. The video is trying to make us feel super happy and heartwarming because we see a grandson and grandma doing fun fulfilling things. Macklemore might have done this because he didn't know how much time he had left with his grandma. His grandma ended up dying around four years after this video was made.

The use of Ethos in the Lyrics

There are many evident uses of ethos in the Lyrics, so I will keep it to three of the most important examples.
The first use is when Macklemore says, "Been chasing dreams, but I never slept." This quote is at the start of the song and it sets up the whole song. In this line of the song Macklemore is stating what he has been working for and how big it is. He says that he has been working towards his dream, but he hasn't taken a break in doing so.
The second use is when Macklemore says, "So when I leave here on this Earth, did I take more than I gave?" This part is when Macklemore starts to talk about his life as a person and what he has done. He is trying to reflect on his impact on the world and this shows us the type of person he truly is. Macklemore believes you must leave a positive impact on the world in order to live a happy and fulfilling life.
The third use is when Macklemore says, "Did I look out for the people or did I do it all for fame?" In this line Macklemore is reflecting on his impact again. Being that this is the second time he is reflecting on himself it tells the listener its very important to the song and the overall message.
So, the use of pathos in "Glorious" by Macklemore help tell us what kind of person Macklemore is and the life he wanted to live. This fits closely with the previously identified message of this song.

The use of Pathos in the Lyrics

Macklemore has three distinct spots that he uses the appeal of pathos in and I am going to identify them to try and boost the strength of the identified message of the song.
The first example is when Macklemore says, "Can't pack up a U-Haul and take it with you when you're gone." This line is trying to talk about material items and how they are meaningless when you die. The more important part is the human impact you have. Macklemore is trying to make the listener reflect on themselves and what they've done to help others. This could be a sad line if you only care about material items and not about the impact you have on others.
The second example is when Macklemore says, "My grandma smiling down on me like woo, that boy got bars." Macklemore is talking about one of his grandmas that has died and went to heaven. During this part of the song Macklemore identifies that he has been successful because his grandma sees him as someone that "has bars" and this is a good thing in the genre of rap. It means they have good lines and flow in their music. This is in the appeals of pathos because Macklemore is talking about his deceased grandmother and this is a sad subject to talk about. This could make people feel a little sad if they heard it and actually listened to it.
The last example is when Macklemore says, "I feel glorious, glorious." Macklemore repeats this line many times throughout the song because he finally feels that his life is complete and he feels accomplished. This line stuck out to me and made me feel really happy. I feel very warm and just happy when someone is able to find their passion in life and when someone has had a happy and fulfilling life.
These examples of pathos help strengthen the overall message of the song by talking about the emotional aspect of living a happy life.

Just like the Lyrics, Macklemore is still the speaker as well in the music video. The occasion is to celebrate his grandma Helen's 100th birthday. Thinking deeper I can infer Macklemore wanted to do these things with her so she can always remember it and feel more fulfilled with her life if she isn't already. The audience is someone with an older relative. I think Macklemore is wanting other people to do this with their family. He wants to show people the impact it can have on someone. The purpose of the video was to give his grandma a day she will always remember by doing fun and spontaneous things. The subject of the music video is still living a happy and accomplishing life because they are doing things in the video that look fun and accomplishing. Just to say you egged a house or did karaoke is cool in itself. They are random things that someone wouldn't normally do. Now, with the tone it is obvious that the tone is happy and upbeat because we watch Macklemore and his grandma do fun things all day.

As I stated in the video, through a deeper analysis on the meaning of the song "Glorious" I was able to find that the lyrics and music video do align with the message that I have identified. Looking at Pathos and ethos examples I was able to change my original thesis and make it better and more correct. Macklemore is trying to tell the audience that the key to living a happy and fulfilling life is through leaving a positive impact on the world. The lyrics use the appeals of pathos and ethos to display this message properly. The music video uses the appeals of pathos and ethos to give a visual example of the message the lyrics are trying to display. To conclude, through the careful examination of the video I was able to think deeper into the meaning and find that both the lyrics and music video align together to form a general message to the audience.
