My wife is an International Exchange Coordinator (and technically, I am as well).
We have hosted students from Spain, Germany, Italy, and Norway.
This is a great way to learn other cultures and to expose our children to other cultures. I am a beginner, but have had more success than I could ever dream of. 
Making pickles, tomato sauce, and chile powder has been fun.
We grow our own pumpkins to carve at Halloween (and to make pumpkin pie with!)
We have fresh salad every night with our own lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers.
We have fresh blueberries for muffins, pancakes, and pie.
