Cathy's extended family lived in Woorabinda, and Aboriginal mission 3 hours away from Mackay. She was also very supported, with one of her teachers raising money for Cathy to compete in the championships for primary schools and buying her running spikes. Her passion for athletics grew so much she won national titles for the 100, 200 and 200 metre sprints and high jump by the age of 14.
