A nintinol wire loop is inserted into a delivery sheath. Once the sheath is inserted into the womb, the nintinol reacts to the body temperature and expands the loop. Once the wire is expanded, it can then be placed around the fetus's arm or leg, where blood oxygen is detected through LEDs similar to current pulse oximeters. To remove the oximeter after surgery, the loop is taken off of the fetus's extremity, inserted back into the delivery sheath, and removed from the womb.
