Tracking is synonymous with a sorting system for students. We identify tracking in the educational system through the use of labeling. For example tracking can occur at the elementary school level when students are placed into various group with differing names based on their academic performance or perceived abilities. However, this form of tracking can often be detrimental to a student's progression since they are subconsciously processing that they are different from their peers.

Are there potentially pros to tracking?

Tracking can be beneficial when it is used correctly for the advantage of the student. For example, tracking that allows teachers and educators to identify students who potentially need more assistance and act on these needs are likely to build more positive academic environments. Although tracking is often harmful to underprivileged communities or those who are academically struggling, tracking can be beneficial for high-achieving students who succeed in competitive environments.

How do we initiate "detracking"?

A case of "detracking" begun when an American teacher decided to initiate the "pathway to honors" program which allowed every student to touch base with the same material. This educator essentially leveled the playing field by exposing everyone to the exact same content and "dealing" out the proper resources where necessary. Furthermore, encouraging more diversity in the classroom.

How does tracking differ between grade levels?

The issue with tracking discrepancies between grade levels primarily is centered on the educators. Oftentimes, more "esteemed" teachers are placed with students on the high-track. On the other hand, newer teachers are placed with students on "lower" tracks.

This would allow for increased productivity through the use of personalized courses and learning interests, peer to peer relations through diversity, and equitable opportunities.
