HOW TO ADD ON PADLET & Rules of Engagement:

1) Click on the round button at the right side bottom of the screen. It can be of blue color or red, green or purple.

2) A box will open

3) Write your name on the top where it says "SUBJECT"

4) Below where it says, "Write something..." each student will write their views on the theme. Not to be longer than 150 words. Citations or sources are not required but make your words interesting and engaging.

5) Once done, please click on the word, "PUBLISH" and the box will appear on the Padlet screen.

6) REPEAT the process in another box TO RESPOND TO OTHERS IN YOUR GROUP. Write your name on the top like before and then respond to ALL members of your group below where it says, "Write something...". The response needs to be well structured . Citations or sources are not required but make your words interesting and engaging.

NO MORE THAN 150 WORDS response for each group member. Once done, please click on the word, "PUBLISH" and the box will appear on the Padlet screen.

7) Students WILL also add separately add AT LEAST ONE GIF, video or article on the theme by clicking on any one of the icons on the top of the box beneath where your name is written.

I think as a natural scientist to my core I am for AI with regulations on where and what we use AI for. We can never replace humans and should not want to. Also penalties for the sale and use on the black market.

I think AI does have plenty of advantages, it’s technology advancement but with that I alos believe that there are disadvantages that come with AI as well. Such as unemployment, lack of transparency and the overall dependence on AI.

Hello, Everyone; while AI can be very useful in the right context, the negative impacts on marginalized communities must be noted. While in an ideal world, AI is theoretically unbiased, we have to remember that they are human-made, and whether we like it or not, humans have subconscious or unconscious biases. There have been countless cases of bias in AI. For example, many programs over-represent white people, and have a problem recognizing people of color. I will link some articles below.

While I understand what you are saying, how would we regulate and prosecute at such a large scale? AI is everywhere; even Google Docs is implementing AI into its program. While I also want regulations, I don't have the faith that it will be done responsibly.

I understand the apprehension, especially even recently writers in Hollywood were on strike and one of there demands were controls on AI and requesting that their work not be used to teach AI. So there is a serious problem with AI being used to replace humans because billionaires want cheap labor.

Hi guys, I believe that AI has many benefits that can improve life in many ways, but not in every aspect. It can be useful, for instance, in data analysis, error reduction, automation, and many other fields. I too think that there are more drawbacks to AI than benefits. There have been many failures using AI in different industries. For instance, Tesla's cars now include self-driving technology, which has resulted in several fatalities and accidents. For me, I refuse to entrust my life to autonomous driving technology. That being said, we shouldn't place all of our faith in AI technology because it was developed by people, where there will be flaws and other consequences.

I agree. As we know AI is heavily being used in the manufacturing industry (automation), this has led to unemployment to many individuals. While there are advantages of using it in that aspect, it leaves many trying to gain new employment.

I agree with what Danie mentioned. We are aware that AI is utilized in every possible context. Even while it can't replace people, I think a lot of businesses would like to see it advance to the point where it can take the place of humans in some tasks, as the engineering sector already demonstrates. This would result in these businesses paying less for labor.

In many ways, people view Artificial Intelligence (AI) like they once did the internet. It is a scary new technology that has good and bad aspects. As a person who has always had access to and uses the internet on a daily basis, I would like to see us use this time to develop controls for AI and avoid the pitfalls of the past.

Per Professor Arya's recommendation, I watched the 20-year old science fiction movie I, Robot. It addresses many current topics and depicts a scenario where robots take over the country in 10-years(!) In the plot, the master computer calculates that humans are destine to self-destruction and over rides the programmers in an effort to save humanity and create a better world.

Many people are afraid of AI, but I am encouraged by its use. Currently, my Mother is experiencing a health crisis and I spend hours driving her to appointments for MRIs and scans. Although radiologist and technicians are good, I would be more assured knowing that AI was used to detect abnormalities because as humans, we are all capable of making mistakes.

However, there are dangers: job loss, programming based biases, cybersecurity weaknesses, lack of transparency, and misinformation. Acceptance of AI is largely influenced by age according to a recent CBS News study. It stated that in general, people in their 20s see it as useful; people in their 40s want to see it properly managed: and people in their 60s did not support its use. How we view AI may depend upon our age.

While reading Danie's posted article about AI Bias, I was saddened. Usually, when you remove the human element, you remove prejudices. For example, the many speed cameras on DC streets do not racially profile drivers. They simply flag cars that have exceeded the speed limit. I suppose that like everything else, garbage in equals garbage out. Programmers must make extraordinary efforts to remove discrimination.

While I understand that we that you are apprehensive with human error, but we have to note that AI is human made, and as such there can be errors programed into the software. Personally I would prefer a collaboration between human and AI instead of blindly trusting AI by itself. I believe we would receive better results that way.

I am aware that mistakes are made by humans, but as Danie pointed out, AI was developed by people, hence it will always have flaws. AI is not flawless, thus I wouldn't want to have complete faith in it. When compared to AI, humans are more successful. On this, I entirely agree with Danie.

Hi Maia: There is no paper on this. It was noted in the assignment content that each group member has to post their views on AI and then respond to other team members and also put up one GIF.

This is really a more immersive, interactive, creative form of a discussion board.

The human element is very important. When I’m sick, I want a compassionate medical professional, preferably in-person. During telemedicine appointments, I often fear that small observations might be overlooked. I support the use of AI as a supplement. Sadly, in many underserved communities, technology is too expensive and staff is overworked. AI would be a safeguard, an on-the-scene second opinion.
