We've been learning about these things, not only in this book, but through this whole semester. Previously, we discussed how to measure success, and many of the answers related to what was in this book. Success is in finding happiness. Success is in finding love. Success is in being able to express yourself. Even though it might not say anything about success, it still relates to going after what you want. If Janie were to define success, she would define it as obtaining freedom. Through each romantic relationship she has, she learns more and more about what it means to be truly free. Her first marriage to Logan is arranged, and she hates him because she doesn't feel as though she can live her own life. If she stuck around, maybe she would be stuck in this position forever. So she runs away with Joe. Originally, Joe is kind to her, but eventually becomes another version of Logan. His sour attitude towards Janie makes her feel trapped again. After Joe dies, she finds another man who she truly loves named Tea Cake. This man respects and loves her, and continues to do so.
