The policy statement regards the permissibility of students to carry backpacks to class. Students are currently allowed to carry backpacks to class and are not required to have a locker. I believe the school with be safer and students will have fewer distractions or excuses not to do work if all students are required to leave their backpacks. Alternative education chose me when I needed a job. The first two years, I treaded water trying to get by. Thanks to experience and the Marygrove Master’s in the Art of Teaching program, I am swimming. The exposure and experiences I had through this program while discovering Calhoun Community High School (CCHS) and creating my personal style of teaching, have helped me to become a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants teacher to the teacher that designs units and lessons with understanding as the primary focus. Understanding in my classroom looks different for every student and rarely happens in a predictable order. However, my students are realizing mathematical success because I have learned through my studies and experiences to teach the way students learn.

This padlet documents that growth and compares the new with the old. Included are student samples, assignment and assessment examples, and classroom activity pictures.
