The part of the mission statement which resonates the most with me was the ability to inspire students to engage in their learning. We must encourage students to have a growth mindset and inspire them through modeling and encouragement to be passionate about their learning.

Project Based Learning

I am eager to explore project based learning at the kindergarten level. At this age, children are taught foundational skills of effectively and clearly expressing their ideas, collaborating, empathizing with the needs of others, working through failure/making mistakes, and to planning/carrying out/assessing the effectiveness of their ideas. These are all key elements of becoming problem solvers and contributing members of a team project. I want to teach these skills to students and allow them time to practice them through the activities we do in our class.

In terms of the inclusion pillar, I took a course over the summer which involved conducting a diversity audit of a library collection. I would like to apply what I learned to incorporate more books that reflect the TTU population and include characters and authors with various backgrounds, religions, learning differences, etc.

Inspire

I believe that if you can inspire a student to take risks and chances, when exploring a concept or learning a new skill you will help develop a life long learner. Many times you'll see a student push away if they aren't having success, which diminishes their inspiration of new personal growth. When students aren't inspired to grow and learn, you tend to see "fear of failure" beginning to set in. This is the ultimate disruption to a learners ability to grow independently.
