Teaching Strategies for Goal 2:
- Understanding your students’ interests will provide them with quality learning opportunities. By giving them the opportunity to explore areas they are interested in – for example, the environment – they will be more likely to engage with the learning process.

- Give students time and opportunities to explore their interests and to discover what they truly love to do. This is so they can develop their knowledge and the skills needed to succeed in the areas they are passionate about.

(Information from: reference 1).

Teaching Strategies for Goal 3:
- The use of visual supports in the class. Visual supports can be used to break down the steps of any task and help students with Autism to understand what is happening.

- When scheduling, think about teaching flexibility and how to cope with something unpredictable. Put the word “surprise” in one time block. Teaching flexibility and unpredictability are important life skills because the day doesn’t always go as planned and things can change.

- Give students the freedom to make their own choices by starting small with two choices. For example: “Would you like an apple or banana for snack?” Can also start with a non-preferred activity followed by the choice of a preferred one. For example: first you can do Maths, then you can (let the student choose between 2/3 things they like to do). This teaches the child they can do something they don’t like and survive and delays gratification, all part of life.

(Information from: reference 3).
