Geography and sustainable transport are linked because it benefits the environment of the world we live in, urban land use and landscape wise, and most importantly climate change wise.

Transportation vehicles are the biggest greenhouse gas contributor. But transport is an important part of our daily lives because it used to get to different places. There are many different kinds of transportation such as cars, motorbikes, etc. But not every kind is a sustainable. Sustainable transport such as public transport, carpooling, biking and walking are better for our world because they produce less CO2 than if one petroleum-based or diesel-based vehicle is used per person.

For every mile traveled, every car on the road emits about one pound of CO2. This is why we should share transports and switch to carpooling or using public transport to get to our destinations, while reducing carbon emissions! (UCLA Transportation, 2021) This does not only have benefits on the environment but also save people a lot of money. Sharing a car with a friend, coworker or family member reduces the price we have to pay for petrol, for the passengers and the driver in a car. (Thirdview, July 18 2023) Also, paying for a monthly pass for public transportation is less expensive than everything we have to pay for a car which can go over a 1000$ a month in Quebec (gas price, insurance, maintenance, parking, etc). (CityNews, February 21 2024) This will not only reduce the amount of carbon emissions in the air but also traffic congestion since more people will be in one vehicle instead of one person per vehicle. Some people might find it inconvenient because it may disrupt their privacy, peace and comfort but this is a price to pay to reduce our carbon footprint.

Biking and walking are a great environmental and healthy alternative for transport. Not only does it reduce CO2 emissions by a lot because these do not use fossil fuel at all but it also keeps us in good shape and benefits our mental health because fresh air and exercice is what most of us need! The main challenge with this mode of sustainable transport is that there is not safe infrastructures dedicated for it everywhere. That is because we live in a car-centric world. Not to mention cars have a huge involvement in pedestrians and cyclist getting injured. Therefore it can dangerous and inconvenient to use this method to get to some places because sidewalks or lanes for bikes do not exist or are not safe in some cases. If more people were to use this transportation style maybe others could get influenced to join in the lifestyle which will make us heard by the people who can make a change in the roads and city infrastructures. (Clean Air Council, n.d.)

To make sustainable transportation more encouraging and accessible people need to be heard by their government. Organizing public protest like occupying the roads with bikes or pedestrians is also a more vocal and effective way of being seen by the population and government. People should also also encourage their entourage to follow them and do the same as them because the more we are the more likely that the government notice this change in pattern and decide to invest money on this sector.
