History of Makeup

Makeup started out as a charcoal and lead combination spread all around the eyes by ancient Egyptians, probably used to block out the sun. In the Victorian era, makeup mostly consisted of a white powder on the face, as more colorful makeup was associated with prostitutes. Moving forwards to the late 1800’s and portrait photography was popularized, and mirrors became more widely available. People were paying more attention to how they looked, and this helped makeup become popular. In the early 1900’s, actors were moving from the stage to the screen. The actors were used to heavy makeup that made them visible to the last row, but that didn’t do well on camera. Around 1914, Max Factor, a man who provided wigs to Hollywood, developed the first modern foundation. Max later would go on to create lipgloss and eyebrow pencil. In 1915, Mz. Williams developed mascara by mixing coal dust and petroleum jelly, a product her brother would later use to found the Maybelline Company. A century later and it’s the products developed in the 1910’s-1920’s that are still popular today, even with modern women questioning the connection between makeup and other social problems.

The biggest threat to safety regarding makeup is mascara. Because it is applied very close to the eye with less than a centimeter to spare, mascara wands can poke the eye and scratch the cornea, allowing for bacteria to travel in and cause infections. However, there has been lead found in lipstick, which is very dangerous if you are an individual who licks their lips a lot. There is also the overall concern that makeup is affecting women’s mental health, making them think that they are not “pretty” enough. Studies have also shown that women who wear makeup are paid more than women who don’t, showing that men have a natural bias towards women who are “prettier.”

Environmental impacts of makeup

Most makeup has a chemical that falls within the category of PFA’s or per- and polyfluorinated substances. PFAs are usually used the most in waterproof makeup, as well as raincoats, because water is repelled by them. PFA’s are dangerous because they do not degrade in the environment. PFAs have also been proven to cause health issues, such as low birthweight babies and kidney cancer. This can cause harm to the ecosystem for octillions of years to come, due to the fact that that is how long the PFAs will be around for. They will be around for longer than the last plastic water bottle, poisoning the environment with their water-proof, age-old poisons.

Solving the problem

One way we can solve this problem is to find safer ways to make things waterproof. This can be done by scientists looking at different water proof organisms, like ducks and jungle plants, to figure out how to produce an environmentally friendly waterproof solution, in a process known as biomimicry. Biomimicry has already been used to solve many problems, so why couldn’t it solve the problem of PFAs?
