Home Alone follows a young boy who has been left to fend for himself after a pandemic has killed his parents and seemingly all over adults. I chose this project because the locations and lighting gives me the opportunity to create an indie slower film.

I have been freelancing as an editor at a company called London Filmed which specialises in creating and filming corporate events. This leads to lots of editing work involving multicam editing and organising powerpoint slides. However, there is also often the opportunity to edit highlight reels for these events. This involves creating selects from interviews at the event and selects from B roll and cutting to a song to create a good spirited clean cut suitable for a corporate client. I have attached an example I edited above. I am editing for London filmed a couple days a week for the foreseeable future so I should have the chance to edit one of these videos in the near future.

I began editing a highlights reel for the company Community Fibre who have recently had an event at Churchill's War Rooms in London. The first thing I do when approaching one of these edits is look at the brief. The brief for this specified they wanted a minute and a half cut which incorporated positive sections from the interviews at the event. After learning this I place all the footage into a timeline on Premiere Pro and separate the interviews and B roll from the longer footage of the talks that happened at the event. Then I create a new sequence and trim the beginning and ends of the footage so when I go through the selects I am only looking at the good parts of the footage. I make selects by placing the clips I like onto the track above and then moving those clips into a new sequence to comb through again. When making selects on the interviews I have to pay special attention to what I want the narrative to be and what statements it would be best to begin and end on. Moreover, I need to consider what the client wants their viewers to hear so I make note of the best positive feedback people at their events have. In this case there were only two 5 minute interviews so making selects from these wasn’t too difficult. When making selects from B roll I have to consider how the camera moves, how the people in frame look and how I can structure the highlights video. Typically our camera operators shoot footage of the outside the venue which I label in the sequence as you can use that footage set the scene at the beginning of the edit. Other clips I look out for involve people smiling or gesturing during the talks and when socialising.

The next step is finding the right music from either Artlist or Epidemic sound. The best music for one of these edits will include a 15 second portion at the beginning of the song before the beat starts as that often works well with the outside footage of the venues. Once, finding the right song I begin constructing a rough edit with a strong beginning and end and a good flow between the B roll footage and interviews. I found this quite easy for this project as the camera operators had captured some good footage. Furthermore, they shoot at 50fps which means I can slow down the shots which gives the video an important edge.

After completing the rough cut I have to finalise the cut and then move onto the finishing touches. This involves completing a colour grade. At London Filmed we grade inside premiere pro by using a Lut on all the footage and then adjusting to make sure the colours are balanced and the shots look good. Unfortunately, most of the lighting at this event was orange which meant the colour of the footage wasn’t great but I think the outside shots looked good. After this I export the video in with the H.264 codec to create an HD mp4 file which I upload to frame io and send to my colleagues for an internal review. They were happy with the highlight reels and sent it over to the client.

The client uploaded some comments on frame.io regarding the edit which I had to work on. This involved simple things like reducing the sound of the music and swapping out unsatisfactory shots. One of which being a shot which had empty coat hangers in the back. Clients tend to want to avoid these shots as they want to make it look like their events were busy. I swapped these out for some other socialising shots. Other feedback specified they wanted lower thirds for the interviews and a main title. To do this I use the brand guidelines they sent over to create lower thirds in after effects which use the right font, logo and colours. And then I created the main titles in Premiere Pro. After making these amendments the client approved the video

The beginning sequence ends at 1:08 and is where the editing is most standard. I just tried to make the video flow nicely by cutting around Lylos Performance. The dancers sequence is where the verse was updated and therefore there weren't any performance shots. In this sequence I tried to find dancing shots that merged best with the music, for example at 1:20 where the dancer turns in time with the music.

During the slow sequence of the music video there wasn't any bass or drums. Consequently, I used crossfades to create a softer slower part of the music video. I tried not to overdo it because I appreciate it can be a bit of a cheap effect, however the strong lighting in the shots meant that the effect worked well.

The build sequence starts at 1:45 and involves more dynamic shots and faster cuts as the music builds towards the climax.

The ending sequence begins at 2:05 and slows the video back down ready for the end. I stayed on the moving shot for as long as I could because it featured all the people in the music video.

Moving back to the B Roll I decided to sync the dancers to the song and any parts of the song which had underwhelming B roll I would replace with better selects later. I completed a rough cut considering the structure of the song and how that should reflect in the edit. I identified 6 parts to the music video: the beginning sequence, the dancing sequence, the slow sequence, the build and the ending sequence.

Overwhelmed by this decision I decided to move on and sync the performance shots to the song. I did this using the synchronise tool on premiere, which worked for all but one of the clips. When I went to synchronise this clip annually I realised that one of the verses of the songs had been updated since the shoot day and therefore was unusable. This meant there was a decent portion of the song without any performance from Lylo.

I had been making good progress up to this point, However I struggled to make selects from the B roll as I became stuck in two minds. The B roll had the dancers dancing to the whole song and as I began making selects I realised if I were to reorganise these and lose the sync to the song I would be taking away from the dancers' professional dancing. However, if I didn't make selects then I would be relying on there to be a good shot at each point of the song I needed B roll.

Then I cycled through the footage again trimming the beginnings and the ends of the clips. This allowed me to become acquainted with the footage and the song. Also it meant when making selects for each clip I would only see the important parts of the footage.

Next I began making selects for the performance shots of the music video. For these I took note of the camera movement, focus and Lylo’s performance. This went through two rounds before I weedled each set of shots down to one take and a couple selects from other takes where Lylo’s performance was particularly good.
