This new idea cane from Germany, where songs and stories were used to "lay a foundation before formal education began" This idea was important to the formation of American education because it resulted in children, even before beginning real academics, stimulated their minds. It also resulted in a "greater emphasis on the interests of the child in elementary education," an area of American education that until then, had not existed.

I ranked it at number four because we know now that learning in early childhood is a good indicator of future academic success. Kindergarten is important for socializing children and for laying their foundation in school.

This event in Michigan was influential to the formation of American education. This case made public high school accessible to more people because it enabled the school district to tax the public to support the high schools. It set a precedent for future states to do the same.

I ranked this third because I found it very important to the establishment of public American education, enabling the school districts not only the ability to tax the public for elementary schools, but also for high schools, which were often seen as an unnecessary luxury.

This event was vital to the formation of American education because it ruled that the educational policy "separate but equal"---wherein blacks and whites were educated in separate institutions--was unconstitutional, as "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."

I ranked this Supreme Court decision the most influential because it emphasized equality of educational opportunity for people of all races, something that today we see as utterly right. It started the desegregation process of schools.

This act focused on the Asian American immigrants who experience language barriers in school. This event was important to the formation of American education because it established that schools must offer students modification according to their specific needs, in order to have an equal opportunity in education.

I ranked it number two because its aim is equal opportunity in education, especially significant for students who speak another language. As there are so many people who speak a first language other than English, this ruling allows them the modified instruction they need in order to learn.
