My parents always bought cartoon books and had me and my older brother read them. I remember sitting in my room, picking up a book and just reading out loud to myself. I was always stuck in my own world while reading.

Shift: Reading more "advanced" books

After a while, I began to read books that lacked pictures. I remember at first no liking these type of books because I believed color and animation added life to the books; playing a significant role. Shift: Reading without Talking

This may sound silly at first, but one of the major changes I first noticed was being able to read a book in my head and not openly. I would always read the words in a book out loud and it became a habit, that I was eventually turned away from by my parents. It helped a lot because it made my reading more focused. First book that come to memory for this would be The Girl with The Silver Eyes.

Reading Mentor: Mrs. Rollings

Mrs. Rollings was my 6th grade teacher and she had a profound impact on me as a reader. She was the first teacher who really challenged me as a reader, she advocated for me to be in more challenging classes too. I remember staying sometimes after school to sometimes work and improve on an essay or a poem in her class, and she would let me borrow books from her personal collection to read.

I view reading has a way to gain knolwdge and be entertained; reading allows me to view situations from several perspectives and also think critically.

Biggest Reading Challenge

I tend to abandon a book before completing it; the book could be extremely good and I will still stop reading after about 2-3 weeks.

Shift: Analyzing a book

Analyzing books has become second nature, but there was a time when I read books and paid no attention to its meaning. I never truly analyzed a book till the 8th grade. Despite being a new experience, it was not that hard to break down a book, but doing it all the time at first was exhausting. One of the books I analyzed in 8th grade was Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan.
