I am obsessed with my cat (her name is Popoki). I love to be outside - in another life I would love to be a park ranger at a national park. I love to bake, cook and garden and september is one of my favorite times of year because I get to eat tons of things from my garden (yesterday I harvested a 1 pound cucumber and a tomato that was 1.1lbs!) I also like to go to concerts (although being a teacher has made me pretty bad at staying up late...) I care a lot about other people and am really passionate about being a teacher; I think caring about others is one of the best traits a person can have. I can be pretty sensitive at times and sometimes have a short fuse (mostly when people are being mean or inconsiderate to others).

ME AS A LEARNER AND MY BEGINNING OF YEAR STRENGTHS & GOALS

As a learner I learn best by hearing, talking, and doing (I'm not so big on reading information). I am strong in math and am good at asking questions. If you need help with brainstorming on essays/assignments, etc. I am your gal to help you think through what YOU want to say! I struggle when people are having side convos because I can't focus at all if there is background noise. This year I might need help with the technology - teaching online is so new - I appreciate you letting me know what works and what doesn't (in a kind way 😊) so that I can get better. Another goal I have for this year is to make class fun and build connections with students and facilitate students making connections with each other. I am worried that online school could easily be boring and I am going to work really hard to make that NOT the case. Please let me know if you have creative ideas for this!

I really enjoyed reading the story "Heritage" again and feel like using the Up/Down/Both-Why helped me realize some new things about it.

I am proud that I kept revising my theme and didn't just go with the first one because it got a lot better.

I notice that my theme seems a little like it is simple and only captures some of the ideas I had about this story so I want to work on expressing a theme that feels like it captures my deep understanding better.

I think it would help me to talk with other people about the story and then have the same people review my theme in order to make sure that think my written theme matches what I expressed in talking about it. I plan to ask my homeroom for help with this.

I think my strength in using evidence to develop and support ideas in reading is picking places that really connect to me or stand out emotionally. I also think I did a pretty good job of using evidence from throughout the text (not just one place) which helps prove that the idea I have about theme is really central in the whole poem.

A strategy I tried this time was bringing in how my Up/Down/Both-why moments helped me come up with the idea about theme.

What I want to work on is making sure to use direct quotes and say where they come from in the poem story (like the paragraph or line #).

To work on this goal, I need to learn how to cite quotes in poems correctly and just check myself that I am using quotes versus summarizing the poem/story.

I tried out using the author's name and and the title of the story this time. I am proud of how much more complex my theme feels compared to theme checkpoint #1 (especially because that was my goal!) I think one thing that makes it more complex was that I captured a tension - in this case between what the topic of hope for a better home was for the parents (it was an "up" for them because it helped them keep dreaming and feeling positive) and what it meant for the daughter (it was a "down" for her because she felt like they almost lied to her by promising something that would never be and she began to lose trust in them.) I think my big goal I have for improving my theme thinking is getting my themes to be shorter and more to the point. I noticed that as my themes grew more complex they got longer and harder to understand, so I want to work with my team to "wordsmith" them a bit. I'm wondering if it's okay if a theme is more than one sentence?

For this, I tried out using the TEEAL graphic organizer and then just pasted it all together in a paragraph afterward so it would look pretty and professional. I am proud that I achieved my goal of picking and citing direct quotes and where they came from in the text and not just summarizing. I found this easier when I was writing than talking about the evidence which is kind of interesting and a little surprising to notice.

I still want to grow with my analysis. I don't think I am all the way there in terms of picking out individual words and explaining how they got me to my ideas. I also want to keep working on the Link part of my TEEAL writing. I feel like my link in this artifact is sort of the same as my Topic Sentence but just rephrased in a different way.

A plan I have to improve my Link writing is to ask my classmates if I can see what kind of things they are writing for their links.

I tried revising my Topic Sentence AFTER I wrote the rest of my TEEAL and it really made a HUGE difference. I realized that I started with just an emotion about a situation and then ended with a character trait that is actually a little complex. I want to try to talk about the development of the character (i.e. how they change over the story). To do that I think I need to start tracking moments where they deal with a similar situation differently in the beginning, middle, end.

I tried really focusing on the contrast and contradiction moments that I had collected in my dialectical journal. That really helped me see the difference in how the character was at the beginning and the end. I am proud of the way that I used a lot more evidence in supporting my topic sentence and also focused on how individual words in the quote helped me arrive at my claim about how they changed. I'd still like to get better at showing how character development leads me to my idea about theme, and plan to try thinking about this in my future independent reading in Quarter #2.
