This week I watched a movie called Billy Elliot, which took me 1 hour and 51 minutes. The film tells the story of a boy who was born in a poor family, overcame the difficulties of discriminatory and misunderstanding from both the his family and the society, finally became a ballet dancer. This movie is like the story of ugly duckling. The boy practiced day and night, falling and getting up again and again. It is his persistence that lead him to achieve his dream. His qualities are worth learning from. As President Xi said, when we are doing things,“Don’t forget why we started and move forward bravely.”

New words:
disgrace耻辱

In week 2 I read an article and its topic is "Social Media Noise Over 'Mute Car'". After finishing the reading, I had some thoughts. I think setting mute car should be welcomed. Except for little children, there are always some adults who have really bad manners. They talk to their phones loudly for a long time, which can be really bothering. In fact, children’s behavior is a reflection of their parents. Therefore, mute car has become a necessary. Our group talked about this from three parts, which are background information, the process and its effects on environment, economy and technology. In the future seminars, instead of waiting for others to ask for my opinions, I should be more active and talk more. In addition, our seminar should begin with an outline, in case that different parts will be confused.

2. The industrial revolution mainly have positive influence from social perspective. First, it accelerated the process of urbanisation. Factories were gradually concentrated so that many industrial cities were formed. More and more rural populations moved into the cities, and the cities became increasingly important. Secondly, It caused two major changes in the structure of society, with the industrial bourgeoisie and the industrial proletariat becoming the two main classes in society. As the industrial bourgeoisie grew in economic power, they demanded more political rights.

But in terms of environment, the disadvantages overweigh the advantages. The lands for production are largely needed, leaving a large number of animals endangered or already extinct. The biological chain was destroyed, which formed a vicious circle. In addition, industrial development has led to a dramatic increase in carbon dioxide, freon and carbon monoxide emissions, which seriously affected the air and water quality.

But their peaceful life was broken by the arrival of her grandmother, who wants to give her the best education and make her one of the brightest people in the world. The film focuses on the child's education, and it calls for deep thought. In my opinion, I agree with the uncle, because it is important to give children a happy and normal childhood, or their character may be bad and even have psychological illness.

Inside Out
The film is a cartoon. It talks about every person has five emotions in their brain controlling their minds. The movie is about one of the emotions “Joy” with the help of other emotions, finally finds back Riley’s happyness. The film shows our real life in a lovely way. And from it, I know that we should control our emotions properly, or we will hurt the people who really love us.

New words:
spit 吐痰 吐口水
bravo 喝彩 好极了
railing 栏杆扶手
core 核心 要点
organic 有机的 组织的 器官的
curse 诅咒 咒骂
roll 滚动 翻身
sass 顶嘴 说无理的话
defcon 戒备状态
exec 执行
dump 倾倒
stuff 东西 材料 填充物

This week I listened to a lecture called "Why Schools Should Start Later For Teens". The speaker is a sleeping researcher. However, just like the other mothers, she has to wake her son up early in the morning even though she knows that not enough sleep is bad to teenagers’ health. Therefore, she made a speech on the topic of this. She thinks that the time that the schools make is the main problem. So she thinks it is necessary for schools to start later for teenagers’ health.

New words:

This week I listened to a lecture called "We Are The World, We Are The Future". There is one sentence I would like to share,“ We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite.” I like these words because they remind me that the future can be anything that I want it to be. We are like farmers, if we plant a good seed, we would reap a good harvest. But if we plant nothing, we will get nothing at all. Therefore, when facing the difficulties in life, do not doubt yourself. Just to be brave, and you can finally be the one that you want to be.

New words:
verse 诗 诗篇
infinite 无穷的 无尽的
reap 收获 收割
harvest 丰收
rosy 美好的 乐观的
cheek 脸颊
supple 柔软的 灵活的
grain 粮食
palm 手掌 棕榈树
eternity 来世 不朽

The Pursuit of Happiness
The movie is about a man who was on the on the verge of bankruptcy finally became a stock market trader through his efforts. I think it is inspirational. There are many difficulties on the road to success, and if we give up, we will lose everything. So we must put all the efforts into the thing we want to do. The happiness and success does not come to you, and it is the process that matters.

New words:
navy 海军历史片
daycare 日托
revolutionary 革命性的
luxury 奢侈 奢侈品
landlord grocery 伙食
micro 极小的 微观的
scanner 扫描仪
pregnant 怀孕
submit 使服从 主张
share a ride 搭车
procedure 程序 步骤
swim 使旋转
holy cow 我的天啊
flip around 掉头
shift 轮班
declaration 申报公告，申诉书
pursuit 追求

This week I knew the importance of reflecting and how to do a reflection.I also listened to a lecture about motivation at work and learnt some signposting language from it. For example, when we are giving an overview, we can say "as we'll see from today's lecture...", "in today's lecture I would like to look at...", "in this lecture, I'll be focusing on...". If we want to sequence points, we can use the phrases like "First, we 'll look in more detail at...", "Then, we'll move on to look at...", "After that, we're going to see...", "And finally, I want to take...".

This week I learnt two types of listening, which are bottom-up listening and top-down listening. Bottom-up listening is to focus on the individual sounds and put them together to make words, and then phrases, clauses ,sentences and finally texts or conversations. Top-down listening is to use my own knowledge and background information to predict what might the lecture talk about before the lecture actually begins. These two kinds of listening are used for different aims. When we are listening for main ideas, summarizing or taking notes, we should use top-down listening. But if we want to listen for specific details, read list titles and authors, or do homework deadlines, we should use bottom-up listening.

This week I learnt about perspectives. In a lecture, there will be different perspectives, so we need to distinguish them. In addition, when listening to a lecture, we should focus on some important words that show the speakers' stance, for example, "unlikely", "might", "could". If there are several different perspectives in one lecture, we should take notes of each of their stance and opinions.
