Patent No. 223,898 and patented on January 27, 1880. Though Thomas Edison did not invent the first light bulb - it had been around for many years already - he was able to make it more affordable, reliable, and efficient. Attaining a certified patent gave Edison the advantage in the entrepreneurial era in the late 19th century.

The Race: An early American technology rivalry

When thinking about American rivalries, what may come to mind is Chevy vs. Ford, Apple vs. Microsoft, or Boston Redsox vs. NY Yankees. But, arguably one of the biggest American rivalries occurred in the late 1880s, in New York City. The rivalry began because of the race of patenting the lightbulb. Both, Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse had their own ideas on what the design and capabilities of the lightbulb should be. And with this brought criticism from each other on minor details/ mistakes. What really sprung this feud was Westinghouse wanting to compromise with Edison. Edison didn’t want a compromise, he simply wanted nothing to do with Westinghouse. In the end, Edison got the patent but the rivalry didn’t end their... he would sue Westinghouse for one billion dollars. This would be Edison’s attempt to eliminate his competition.
