Before this module, I've been interested in paintings because of Van Gogh's works. His works that, despite being melancholic, spark joy and hope in me. So, in I only find paintings beautiful and good if it sparks emotions in me. I still find disturbing paintings beautiful because of the technique used, but I was more drawn to the light-themed paintings.

What I Learned

With this module, I learned about the elements and principles that constitute a beautiful painting. The ones that struck me the most is the element of value and the principle of balance in symmetry.

The element of value refers to the lightness or darkness in a painting. The technique that which applies the juxtaposition of the light and dark is called "chiaroscuro". I find this element relevant because it can direct the viewer's focus to a particular component of the painting. The component with the higher value becomes the focal point. Moreover, value can add to the drama due to the contrast between light and dark.

The principle of symmetry refers to the technique of artists to achieve equilibrium in a painting. Components that are found in one half of the painting cannot completely overshadow the other half. Balance can be done through shapes, weight, colors, and lines. Without the application of this principle, the painting would appear chaotic and without order. Humans naturally tend towards the symmetrical aspects, be it in the natural world, or in artworks.

Thus, elements and principles are equally necessary in making a painting beautiful.

Since we only got to tackle the Baroque style in painting, I would like to learn about contemporary painting. This style features geometric and abstract shapes that do not necessarily represent nature. So, I would want to know how to judge the beauty of contemporary style.
