This quote symbolizes that he surrendered “K” to the wave by not saving him, but saving himself instead; “K” was the narrator's best friend (the most precious thing inside him) and the wave ( the something else that he surrendered “K” to). The seventh man explains that he is “grateful that, in the end, I was able to attain salvation, to effect some sort of recovery.” (434 and 435). The narrator explains that the wave gave him strength in the end and he now knows what fear actually is.

The wave represents the demon in an aspect of taking away his best friend in the middle of the crisis. But, the Demons are defeated by the end the story.
