Only similarity is the focus on people. However the video is much powerful. It goes beyond the story of a man and his family. It embodied the fate of a whole city and beyond. It contains data that helps to see the bigger picture. The video is professional, probably produced by an experienced team. The Yaser story is quite basic in its writing. The Video is made as a fiction, you don't know what to expect till the end. It catches your attention way after the 8 seconds attention span :)

The similarities are a family that suffers from different circumstances, one due to violence and the other due to the density of the cities, the lack of planning and the lack of awareness of each person to have a private car.
The video helps to understand the situation through the power of images and figures.
Yaser's story is simpler but his story is more painful because it is the children who suffer the asylum.
The main difference is that one is text, the other video and the length of the stories.

First, I have to say, I was so touched and shocked watching the film Cidade Inerte.

The similarities between Yaser's story and Cidade Inerte are the human stories that we can relate ourselves to. In Yaser’s story, it is about a father and a family and it is the same for Cidade. Both also reflect facts of what happens out there in our real life.

The differences here are the Yaser’s story is a real story while Cidade Inerte is a fictional movie. The approach of the Yaser’s story is milder and, in a way, positive for the future of the family (as they are waiting to get in the boat heading Germany). The approach of Cidade Inerte is rougher and attacking to your feelings with cruel facts. It calls for immediate actions to save the environment. Honestly, after watching the Cidade Inerte, I am seriously thinking of moving to using bike to commute to the office.

Both are focusing on family to bring out the struggle that the people are going through. This gives the story a lot of power, because everyone has their own story with their family, and thus one can connect with the characters regardless of the background or situation.

Differences are around the reality vs fiction (Cidade Inerte is fictional), connection of the person's story to the larger issues (Yaser's story focused on the family only, not on the larger plight of Syrian refugees), utilization of data (present in the Cidade Inerte, not in Yaser's story).

While real stories can help the audience to understand what is happening to real people, there are boundaries in how we should tell these stories. We should avoid writing stories that strip the people of their dignity just to shock the audience with the gravity of their situation, we have seen too much of this type of "poverty 🤬", especially in fundraising.

When illustrating the situation of people through fictional story that is based on data, especially if it is looking forward to a possible future if we do not take action, like Cidade Inerte does, we can use different ways to communicate this and affect people. Of course, as in telling the stories of real people, we should not revert to being only shocking, and we need to avoid stereotyping vulnerable groups of people, especially refugees and minorities. But this type of storytelling is very powerful.

Similarities: both stories set the scene, provide a context for the reader/viewer to be put in the shoes of the characters. They both aim at making a strong case for the cause using key messages, leaving the audience with take-aways, encouraging them to reflect on solutions to solve these challenges and act.

Differences: one story is true while the other is fictional; how you relate to the characters e.g., Yaser is someone you would want to sympathize with while the dad of Cidade Inerte seems like the "bad" guy which you do not necessarily want to relate to because it brings up your own responsibility. The story of Yaser appeals to the cause of refugees and how you could help while the other calls for a change in your own habits and behaviours.

The similarities in stories are that they both are human-interest stories. The stories of two families are used as optics to a bigger problem (war-torn Syria and air pollution and traffic congestion in Sao Paolo). Both stories are emotional, dramatic even. Both feature families and are relatable, as any human being can relate to such situations.
Differences:
Stories are told in different mediums - Yaser's story is textual medium, and Cidade Inerte is all about visual medium. In Yaser's story, the family acts as a united front, together they make it to Germany safely because they work together. In Cidade Inerte the family is torn apart, and only at the end, they come together as a whole.

It is also worth mentioning that both stories are great in depicting emotional details. However, in Yaser's story, the focus is made on people's emotions and challenges, and the base for the story is real-life case, whereas in Cidade Inerte, the story is fictional but based on sad statistics.

Similarities:
Both stories are human-centered. They revolve around the people. They both have a good cause that leaves the reader/viewer with powerful take-aways, with somehow a call to action/solutions to address the existing problem/challenge.

Differences:

Yaser's story is a true story while the other one is a fictional one but very relatable!

The video story, though a bit long, captures the viewer's attention till the end, making you wonder what would be the end, and brings some striking facts that make you wonder and create feelings of anger. Also, the end is not necessarily expected.

Yaser's video is a short video that is straightforward and which obviously required 0 budget to produce, yet creates the effects of empathy and support needed. The video story is surely costly but it certainly is more powerful. It spurs you to take action, to hate cars and pollution, to maybe commit to drive less and adopt more eco-friendly means of transportation (at least this is what I felt). I found the video very strong!

What connects the two is a strong story that is overarching the individuals depicted and pointing out to a larger issue.

As for the differences: in my opinion, the format makes the biggest difference. A video or a short film is nowadays more accessible to the audience rather than a text (though accompanied by a few photographs), however, the text is less time-consuming for the receiver. Yaser's story is based on true events, Cidado Inerte is a fiction based on real figures. In the text about Yaser's family, the main characters are the victims of their circumstances and all of them are on the same boat (literally and figuratively), whether Cidado Inerte points out to the differences in opinions regarding one family – but despite them the family is united at the end.

So you get to understand the big cause, but emotionally connect with the characters of the stories.
Differences: One is real and the other is fictional. One is a written story, while the other is a video. Though a bit long, but the messages of video are very strong, be they the feelings of despair with the girl (on a personal or emotional level, you can connect yourself with her feelings) or the grave environmental hazards of pollution (bigger cause) or the parental challenges (again something personal and emotional). Yasser's story is also very emotional, but had it been shot in a video, the message would have even been more powerful to see the real time experience and challenges of the father and his children.

Both stories are compelling, human-centered, and highly relatable. It was interesting to compare the different impacts of the written-word and video format. While the former harnesses a reader's imagination to create empathy, the latter has a more direct and immediate effect, and the images remain in the viewer's mind. One key difference is that Cidade Interte feels more like a dystopian near-future vision (despite being backed by current data), while the Syrian family story is more "now".

Both stories are moving, show the reality that must be changed, and raise awareness of critical problems. They give data and details that humanize. The differences: the audiovisual language has great power to tell stories, but this series is an extensive content. Short stories like Yaser's may be easier to consume.

One in a book, another one in a video. One is the true story and the other one is a fiction though it is close to our heart as we have the same problem.
