PD1 (20-21) - Bias & Microaggressions Video Reflection by Debora Speirs

Post ONE reflection on the class Padlet. Write your name in the TITLE then compose a response to one or more of these questions: What did you learn while watching the video? Why are implicit biases and microaggressions dangerous?
Have you ever experienced implicit bias, microaggressions, and/or judgement? If so, how did this situation make you feel and how did you respond? What can we do as a class to avoid implicit bias, believing and affirming microaggressions, and passing premature judgement on one another?

At times we say things that are not meant to be hurtful at all but they come off differently to the person.

I learned a lot from this video. This video really showed me more of how people can say things that can really hurt other peoples feelings or make them feel offended and they just don't think before saying it. I do believe that the insults/comments can affect that person's environment but also someone's mental health. All though it may come off to be unintentional or even intentional I feel like no matter how it came off you should think before saying it to a person. And ask yourself would I want someone saying this to me, probably not so I'm not gonna say it.

Microaggression can come across as more as an unconscious response and often times isn't always put out to the some that it could be viewed as hurtful. It can be dangerous since it harms and degrades a culture/race/religion/gender/sexuality trying to give backhanded compliments towards someone. I have definitely experienced many incidents of microaggression, I cant really remember any at the moment, but I've gotten it towards my hair especially before and after I relaxed it. Sometimes I got it on how I can be very loud at times. Just like how some people in the video, it doesn't really hit how offensive it could be until after the conversation, and it's usually gives me a sense of regret for just letting it pass like that. I think helping to reduce microaggression is to let people experience more incidences of open-mindedness and maybe "out of the norm" people/situations since microaggression would come from close-mindedness or lack of experience of things out of stereotypes.

In the video I learned, how hurtful comments and words affect people mentally. People should not be attacked by these type of comments. Everyone is very different and no one could ever understand what another person is going through. Even when someone says something rude, it could affect them more than we think. They could already have had a traumatic experience and this on top of that would spike their emotions to a really bad state. Things like race we're chosen for us at birth, so there is no point in harassing someone because of it, especially since it is out of our control. And I don't think it is really that hard to think before speaking.

From this video, I have learned that there are many different forms of microaggressions. The video shows what these comments actually translate to. I was very upset at the amount of stories involving professors and adults. I have also learned that some people don't know that they are being insulting. I have experienced judgment. there was many people at my old school who had many stereotypes about Americans that they put onto me, that we were dumb and fat. This goes to prove that stereotypes hurt. I had no idea there were so many bad stereotypes of Americans in the eyes of other until I was there. Many boys at that school would also make comments to women that were really disrespectful including me. Microaggressions can have a serious impact on peoples lives, even if the other person doesn't think so.

I feel that should be more of a hey do I see the things that people were talking to me about in this person or not.

As a class to not have to pass microaggression around we can just take the time to have each other clarify things or just chat outside class and get ot know one another in some way that we can relate.

In this video, I learned that people make so many assumptions about others based on what they look like. These assumptions come off as offensive, but the person assuming may think what they're saying is a compliment. I've seen this happen so many times and people have these thoughts just because of stereotypes they've heard. I have experienced microaggression multiple times throughout my life. One of them was when I was in my 7th grade geography class and the teacher asked if anyone knew what a word in spanish meant. Pretty much everyone in the class looked at me assuming I could speak spanish. I felt kind of embarrassed and just annoyed because so many people assume that I can speak spanish just because of my name or the way I look. In reality, I can't speak spanish and I'm only 25% Puerto Rican, and that's it. It also makes me feel ashamed for not knowing how to speak spanish.

I don't use slang in my speech so people will respect me and listen to my opinion. When I do relax and speak in the accent I actually have people will say I can't talk like that because I'm "white" as if black people all look one way.

I constantly experience implicit bias, microaggressions, and judgement for speaking "right or white" and just have correct grammar in class and outside of it. Also for not acting black enough, such as not talking a specific way, not being from a certain economic background, and just not overall fitting the black stereotype. These judgments have and still confuse me at times of my skin not being black enough but my skin being black enough to get stopped on my way home from school for no reason other than "I resembled the suspect". I responded to this confusion a lot of the time with trying to act overly black or not black at all in societies eyes, which messed me up even more realizing that by abiding or not by these stereotypes made me more accepting by fellow black people and even other races that seemed more comfortable that I acted in those ways, while doing the opposite made those people uncomfortable and other impressed that I was so different.
