The tone of the poem is hopeless and depressed. The poet expresses this by repeating phrases in the text like "I thought, as I wiped my eyes on the corner of my apron" (1) . Reading these phrases gives the reader a feeling of sorrow or hopelessness.

In the text, she is comparing the feeling that Penelope was having to an "ancient gesture", as that feeling is found in many people and events in history. The quote in the text to support this would be "And I thought, as I wiped my eyes on the corner of my apron: This is an ancient gesture, authentic, antique," (10-11).
