SMART objectives

Blocking:
I will watch 3 of the previous games I played in. I will watch one game every week for three weeks. Each game I will note down the number of blocks that were effective and the blocks that were unsuccessful. I will then go through it with my coach so he could tell me anything extra or expand on what I have already said. I will then work on this in games and watch three new videos in 2 months time, to see if it has helped and if I have improved this skill. Hopefully by this point i will be making 6-8 blocks per game.

Curled pass:
A curled pass can be improved by realistic game like exercises. One exercise would be a "piggy in the middle" like scenario whereby one person stands roughly opposite me, and a defender stands between both of us. The defenders job is to prevent the pass, I must curl the pass round the defender using the proper technique. I will repeat this once a week, for 9 weeks, and the exercise will last for 15 minutes at training. In this time for the first three weeks I would like to achieve a 50% successful pass rate, for the three weeks after I would like to achieve an 80% success rate, and a 90% success rate for the final two weeks.

Justification of SMART Targets

Blocking:
Notational analysis can be excellent for self reflection and being able to see where I made the mistakes, moreover if my coach is telling me I need to improve this part of my game to stay in the squad it would be a good motivator for me. If I can see where I need to improve and my coach gives me ideas on how to, then I will be able to modify this area so it is acceptable. This links to the intrinsic motivational theory, this is when you use self motivation to better yourself. In this case I am motivating myself to do better so that I can get into the team. Moreover, extrinsic motivation is involved as i will be going through it with my coach, this will mean he will also point out some more positive parts to my game. This will give a starting place to work from so that I can improve. By only watching one video a week for three weeks makes the task less monogamous. Moreover, it is not very time consuming, again making it more enjoyable. The fact that I then repeat the process two months later means I will be able to see if my blocking has improved at all, i.e. am i making the number of blocks i should be per game. At this point I should be as i would have had a chance to go through it properly and train it as a skill. This will be the most motivational part, as both myself and my coach will see a big difference in my blocking ability, meaning he will have more confidence in my skill level and so will I. I believe it is a realistic target as I am not asking a huge increase, especially over a two moth period, and with some motivation and the coaches help it will be made easier.

I felt that the best way to improve this skill was from a lot of practice in realistic game like situations. This is why I decided to have the drill set up in a "piggy in the middle" style scenario. Practicing a lot creates muscle memory. Muscle memory means that the muscle groups involved in the exercise will be able to recreate the actions that it has done previously, in this case the curled pass. In order to gain muscle memory for this particular activity, you must do the exercise a lot and correctly. If I do not do the drill right, then it is important to keep doing it until it is. The reason I chose to do the exercise for nine weeks is so there is enough time to build muscle memory, it also means there are three weeks for three stages of progression. Moreover, once a week means I will not over train the pass, also 15 minutes is only a short amount of time so it is unlikely I will become bored or demotivated. This style of training relates to the practice theory, more precisely, fixed practice. This is the repetition of one skill to strengthen my motor program. Although, this type of practice is normally related to closed skills, I did not feel comfortable changing the scenarios in only a nine week period. This is because I want to be completely confident with this scenario first and so I will actually attempt the pass in a game. The repetition is also linked to the inverted U theory; which states that the more aroused we are, the better our performance, however, the more stressed we are the worse our performance, and visa versa. This is as a result of our stress meaning we throw worse passes, this means we become more frustrated, stressed and angry (all contributing factors to lowering performance). However, the more confident I become in training, the more likely I am to believe in my ability, this will mean I perform at my optimum for longer as I am no longer stressed by the thought of the curled pass. I also set myself targets that I think are very realistic and comfortably reachable, but still quite a challenge. 50% is quite a low starting point, but if I have thrown no passes in any games it is important to progress slowly, 3 weeks later I look to put some pressure on and attempt to make 80% of my passes (this is a high target but is necessary to see decent progression) and in the final 3 weeks I will attempt to make 90% of my passes, this is so it is not a 100%expectation but it means I am still performing at a high level.

Another weakness is my curled pass. I was unable to throw during my time on the pitch, despite having opportunities to. Lack of attempting means I missed out on being able to fully evaluate my performance. I do not know if I may have been successful in passing if I had tried, but the fact that I didn’t means I was not confident enough to throw it. I need to improve this so I am confident which will give me a more varied range of pass and skill level.

My final weakness is my ability to block passes. I attempted to block four times and as shown in the data only one of them was a successful block. A 25% success rate is quite poor. It means the opposition were able to work their way up the pitch easier and faster. The quicker they moved the Frisbee, the more chances they had to score, ultimately this gives them the upper hand. It then also makes your teamwork harder as they have to track back quicker in an attempt to halt their attack.

It is clear from my notational analysis that I was very good at the front hand pass. I had a 80% success rate, as I threw 5 of these passes and the majority of them reached the intended player. Despite one not going to hand, four successful passes in a 10 minute game is still successful front hand pass every 2.5 minutes (average).

I was also quite good at jumping as I caught the Frisbee 3 out of the 4 times that I jumped. I jumped as I felt it necessary to make the catch. If I hadn't have jumped I may have missed the catch, which would have given my team a disadvantage as the opposition would have had more turnovers, giving them more chances to score
