The wallpaper served as a symbol of her mental illness. It was present from the beginning and it was obvious it needed fixing, but it never received the right treatment, so it got worse as time went along. The women that she saw crawl out of the walls was also an illusion of herself. The symbols serve as a metaphor to address a major issue during the authors time period and it still very much prevalent today.
