Chicken pox, or shingles, is also known as the varicella zoster virus. It belongs to the herpesvirus family. However, it has the smallest genome of all the herpes viruses. Basically, the virus will give the host a unique and itchy rash over most of the body. Red bumps and blisters will grow on the skin, and a popped sore is one of the ways it is transmitted. Within its core is linear double strand DNA. It infects its host by using the glycoproteins on its outer envelope to grant itself access into the target cell. Once inside, it will inject its DNA.

Source: http://study.com/academy/lesson/chicken-pox-virus-structure-and-function.html

It was named by Richard Morton in the 1600s, who believed it to be a mild version of smallpox. William Heberden first proved it to be different from smallpox in the 1700s.

Source:
http://chickenpox.emedtv.com/chickenpox/history-of-chickenpox.html
