Relationships are vital. Kids must know that they are loved and cared for. For many, we are the only ones they may be getting that from. It must be genuine. Even the toughest kids need love. It may take some work and effort but we can choose to love even the unlovely.

How do we teach them
How do we teach them with the required resources and still make school and learning fun?

Sometimes my kids ask me, "Are we doing something fun today?" I understand what they may consider fun may not match up to the standards we need to teach; however, unfortunately, most of the time even my own response to this question is "No, we have to do ____." I can think of many "fun" ways to teach my standards, but when certain resources or ideas are dictated making it "fun" becomes extremely difficult. Sometimes I think we get caught up in the data and forget to teach with inspiration. There needs to be some balance.

How to get students to "buy in." As I mentioned I am very much like my students, but I can't get them to see that. Perhaps being a teacher makes me seem less of a desirable role model. How do we get over the apathy and hopelessness that seems to pervade high school in particular.

While I already knew that some students often feel lost and hopeless, it really struck home with me when Wayman said, "All of the violence, all of the disrespect, all of the walking the halls, all of the assaults- it all came because they were in this deep state of hopelessness."

I sincerely read and reread that statement about 5 times because of the magnitude of what it meant. I can honestly say that was a turning point for me. I think I always knew this sentiment deep down, but reading those words from someone who is highly respected and has made an impactful difference in the lives of students and in the educational field just turned on a bright light over my head. Hearing anyone say that they are (or someone else) in a "deep state of hopelessness" really tugs at my heartstrings. It makes me want better for that person and makes me want to do anything to help him/her achieve success and greatness!

Wayman kind of shunned the idea of the teachers giving the 10th grade students reading material on a 3rd grade level, but how is that any different from us giving our students reading material on a kinder level? It seems to me that this may go along with some of the stigmas attached to the EOG. Our lower achieving students (who are usually and statistically on the lower spectrum of the demographics of the Troutman area) are expected to take the same EOG as their average and high achieving peers, but yet we teach them all year long with kinder and 1st grade level reading and math lessons. How are the supposed to learn the curriculum if that is being done, much less pass a state test? This is not a good vision of stability in the measurement of student learning and/or achievement.

You ALWAYS have to build a good rapport with your students. If you don't, they will be more likely to not listen to you, respect you, or even work for you. Students learn best when they know the teacher truly cares. Teachers can show they care by learning personal information about their students and even asking them questions and showing an interest in their lives. But, they can show they care even more by raising the bar and expecting every single student to reach the bar or excel beyond it. Teachers need to make students show ownership and accept responsibility for their actions. Teachers also need to be consistent and never waiver in their expectations or their love for each and every student.
