To bring equity and social justice to SEMS, it’s is important that we understand a students’ perspective in why they do what they do and try to re-establish a connection that they could’ve lost before or during their time here in school. They may not have bonds outside of school so its important that we maintain our image as role models that they can look up to whenever they get lost.

Equity should be utilized as each student shows her/his merit of worth (skills, etc.). We should always teach the individual child through the best of her/his learning style and ability - and include all learning styles when planning and teaching.

I believe too much emphasis is placed upon meaningless aphorisms regarding the recognition of a child’s potentially inequitable start, and not enough placed upon building meaningful skills in those children to help them overcome extra hurdles which may have been placed before them by fate.

I am interested to see the actual skills and action steps that are posed to this question over Equity versus just knowing that it's an issue and talking about it. There's always talk around issues and problems but there aren't near as many workshops and lectures on how to take effective actionable steps to address the issues and problems

Our students come to us with their own biases just as we do; sometime totally unaware of them. We need to make ourselves real to our students so they can empathize with us and vise versa. Know that our students often expect us to react in a certain way to situations, and try to step outside the realm and "walk a mile" in their shoes. Start a conversation to understand where they are coming from instead of assuming.

I really love these conversations and I absolutely support focusing on equity in the sense of truly meeting the needs of all our students. Recognizing bias and how we can confront this is great. That said, I do want to say my only reservation is in regard to putting this solely on teachers. I believe this is part of our responsibility but it takes a village. A major problem in education, and sadly our school isn't an exception to this, is we put way too much of this responsibility on the teachers. Teachers have a lot on their plates especially with large class sizes so they can't do this alone. I feel we really need to do better with not blaming teachers and finding ways that they fall short. There is only so much that a teacher can feasibly do especially when they are the only teacher in the room. So, I think this is important work, but we do need to be mindful to not place all the burden on the teachers to do this work and help to meet the diverse needs of our students.

Teach students various learning strategies that would make their learning tailored to their personal needs. Students will have more buy-in with their learning to be successful if they know what works for them when learning anything new!

Equity means seeing and meeting each student's individual needs.
