It was just a normal day on Earth when the sun started shining brightly and the rain started falling heavily. All the animals were roaming across the jungle when one small chameleon was resting on a leaf. Suddenly, a large rainbow rose from the clouds and the end of this rainbow struck into the chameleon's body giving him the ability of the rainbow. Starting from that day, the chameleon obtained the ability to change its color.

This tale talks about the lizard, which might seem like a simple animal at first, but is a house spirit that is forced to encapsulate itself into the body of a lizard. The tale tells that if you see a lizard's tail lying around, a spirit has been freed, but if an act of cruelty occurs, meaning you decide to cut the tail yourself, the spirit will be forced to stay roaming the earth for eternity. Then it will do its job to make your life, both the mortal and the spiritual one, the greatest of hells.

Once in the prehistoric era, there lived a tiny slug and a huge t-rex. The t-rex, David, was a overconfident, unaware, being that always used his big size as a way to undermine other animals. However, Sid the Slug, though was small, is wise, smart, and prepared. Sid has always been very observate of his surroundings and was always one step ahead of everything. One day, a change had occurred in their environment, the earth was getting hotter. Sid noticed the change in temperature, while David was oblivious and thought that he could survive everything because of his size. Soon enough, more changes occurred; the sky had turned red. Sid had prepared for whatever was to come, he had found a shell that he could take shelter in. While David stayed unbothered of the changes. In the blink of an eye, meteors began to strike the earth one by one. While Sid was safe and sound in his new shell, David had be hit by one of the meteors and died. When the environment became calm once again, Sid the slug was the sole survivor of this phenomenon with his new shell.

On Everest, skilled climbers with expert guides and top gear still felt powerless against a sudden storm. The author elaborated that climbing the mountain is very dangerous. For this reason, deaths and accidents are common. Quote: "Above 26,000 feet, moreover, the line between life and death was so thin and so tenuous that it could be obliterated by the slightest misstep or lapse of judgment."

This story reminds me of the movie “The Blind Side.” Both stories portray the concept of overcoming multiple obstacles with a strong mindset. In the movie, Michael Moher states, “Courage is a hard thing to figure. You can have courage based on a dumb idea or mistake....It all depends on you.” Similar to climbing up Mt. Everest, climbers need to have a strong mentality, for example, to not sleep at night for survival.

This quote reminded me of a scene in the show The Shadowhunters where the main character had a knife almost driven into her head while undergoing a trial to prove her innocence of crime. This similarity shows how both Doug and the character from the show had to push through various obstacles, many of which were life-threatening, to achieve their overall goal and to follow their desires.

"And thus, shortly before noon on May 29, 1953, did Hillary and Tenzing become the first men to stand atop Mount Everest." This quote reminds me of this one scene in the animated series Hunter x Hunter where the main character had finally reached the top of the world. Similarly to the book, the main character, Gon, had to face lots of challenges: fight bosses, completed games, almost risked his life as well. In the book, however, they had toy climb the world's highest summit and that is not an easy task to complete. Both scenes show equal amount of significance as the series was based on Gon finding his dad, and in Into Thin Air, Tenzing and Hillary had marked their name in history, being the first ones to be at the top.

This is also seen in Into Thin Air where the conditions the author and the people he encountered had to go through are closely related to the ones the characters in the Hunger Games suffered. This is portrayed with the quote "Everest has killed a lot of people who had no business being on the mountain, people who were driven by the wrong motives. But those who survived knew that the mountain was bigger than their ambitions."

In Into Thin Air, the book talks about commercialization. Just like Everest’s commercialization brings more climbers who contribute to pollution and overuse of the mountain, many famous natural places face the same issue. Both situations show how our desire to experience nature often has serious consequences for those natural wonders.

Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air is a gripping and harrowing account of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, a tragic event that claimed the lives of eight climbers. Krakauer, a journalist and experienced mountaineer, was part of a commercial expedition on Everest, and he provides a firsthand narrative of the expedition’s escalating perils and the dire consequences of one catastrophic storm.

Through Krakauer’s vivid storytelling, Into Thin Air takes readers into the unforgiving realm of high-altitude climbing, where thin air, freezing temperatures, and oxygen deprivation push human endurance to the brink. The book offers a window into the commercialized side of Everest, where climbers of varying skill levels, driven by dreams and ambitions, take on the world's tallest peak with the support of guides and Sherpas.

Chapter 14 reminds us that no goal is worth risking your or others’ lives. For anyone who dreams of adventure, it’s a warning to remember that some things are simply beyond our control. An example would be when, despite preparations, Hurricane Katrina’s power overwhelmed New Orleans and caused tragic losses. This shows how nature can exceed human control and planning.

The chapter talks about how hard is it to climb the Mt. Everest. This challenge relates to the world too because it is very risky to climb such a high altitude. The author writes “Hall had made a point of repeating his turnaround time—two o'clock—and insisted that everyone follow it, yet when the hour came and went, some climbers continued upward, unwilling to turn back after coming so far” (Krakauer, Chapter 14). This piece of evidence shows how challenging it is to climb a high mountain.

In Chapter 14 of Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer describes the crucial and harrowing moments on May 10, 1996, as he and other climbers attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The climbers face extreme physical and mental exhaustion in the "death zone" — the altitude above 26,000 feet where oxygen levels are dangerously low, making survival difficult. Krakauer, who summits early in the day, begins his descent, but the other climbers are still struggling up the mountain. Severe weather conditions, including sudden snow squalls and intense winds, make visibility and progress challenging. Delays in setting up ropes, lack of oxygen, and communication breakdowns add to the chaos. By the time many of the climbers reach the summit, it's dangerously late in the day, putting them at risk for a deadly descent as a powerful storm begins to move in. This chapter sets the stage for the tragedy to come, emphasizing the growing tension, physical strain, and increasing dangers the climbers face as they fight to survive on their way back down the mountain.

Despite this, he still dreams of reaching the summit. My point is, this should be a reminder that nothing should be worth risking your life for. I know of people who would risk anything for something that they really want, even if it means that they'd die but ask yourself the question: is it really worth it?

In Into Thin Air, Krakauer grapples with the unforgiving nature of Mount Everest, emphasizing the mountain’s complete indifference to human life. This reminded me of the themes in Life of Pi, where Pi also faces an indifferent natural world, drifting on the ocean with only his will and wits to survive. Krakauer and Pi undergo a profound inner struggle as they confront fear and isolation, realizing that survival demands more than physical endurance, it also requires an intense psychological battle. Ultimately, both stories reveal how extreme conditions can transform people, pushing them to adapt in ways they never imagined possible.

Both texts explore the theme of survival in extreme environments and the intimate connection between humans and nature.

In Chapter 14, Krakauer describes the climbers’ desperate struggle to descend from Everest capturing their physical exhaustion and mental turmoil as they battle the elements. This relates to Buck’s journey in The Call of the Wild, where he faces the raw forces of nature in the Yukon wilderness. In essence, both Into Thin Air and The Call of the Wild serve as powerful reminders of the fragility of life in the face of nature's might, exploring the deep-rooted connection between humanity and the wilderness, and the profound lessons learned when survival is at stake.
