Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, where he was raised until he was 13, until he and his family moved to the United States. Him and his family stayed in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, where he worked in a factory for a year, and then moved on to becoming a telegraph messenger. Carnegie later took a job at the Pennsylvania Railroad. There he worked for Thomas Scott as an assistant, and telegrapher. While working in the railroad industry, Carnegie learned a lot and began to make investments. Due to these successful investments, Carnegie left the railroad industry, and joined the steel industry. Carnegie started the Carnegie Steel Company, which helped to increase the production of steel. Carnegie's company made him a very prominent and wealthy man.

He believed that those that were wealthy needed to share their wealth. He wrote his beliefs in a article called, "The Gospel of Wealth." Carnegie became a philanthropist and did things like donate $5 million to the New York Public Library so they could use that money to build more libraries. Due to the help from Carnegie, more than 2,800 libraries were built and opened. In Pittsburgh, Carnegie founded the Carnegie Institute of Technology, which later became the Carnegie-Mellon University. Also in regards of education, he founded the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
