NAREIN A/L JAGATHESSAN

        A181962
        5 August 2023

Progress Update:
Over the course of Week 2, I have dedicated myself to honing my flute skills, and I am pleased to say that I have made notable strides in my musical journey. Focused practice sessions have allowed me to develop a clearer tone and better breath control, enabling me to play with increased confidence and precision.

Key Points from Week 2:
During this week, I have diligently worked on several aspects of flute playing to enhance my overall performance. Notably, I have delved into refining hand positions and fingerings for specific notes, which has significantly improved the accuracy of my playing. Additionally, I have invested time in practicing scales in various keys, a practice that has enhanced my flexibility and adaptability on the instrument. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to learn and incorporate vibrato into my playing, adding an expressive element to my musical interpretation.

Feelings and Reflections:
My feelings regarding this journey are a mix of exhilaration and gratitude. The progress I've experienced has filled me with a sense of accomplishment and joy. Knowing that my efforts are yielding positive results motivates me to keep striving for excellence in my flute playing. Furthermore, the support and encouragement received from my fellow learners have been invaluable, fostering a nurturing and inspiring learning environment.

One Practice Highlight:
A significant milestone for me in Week 2 was mastering the art of vibrato. This expressive technique has allowed me to infuse my playing with emotion and musicality. Now that I have acquired this skill, I am eager to explore its application in my repertoire and imbue my performances with even greater depth and artistry.

Challenges and Coping Strategies:
While progress has been encouraging, I faced a challenge in maintaining consistent vibrato speed. To address this, I sought guidance from my instructor and incorporated practice with a metronome. Additionally, I drew inspiration from accomplished flutists' performances, listening attentively to their expressive use of vibrato, which spurred me to persevere and refine my technique.

Plans for Week 3:
Looking ahead to Week 3, I am enthusiastic about further enhancing my musicianship. My focus will be on refining dynamics and phrasing in my current musical pieces, as I believe these nuances will add a captivating dimension to my performances. To broaden my repertoire, I plan to explore new musical genres and pieces, exposing myself to diverse styles and compositions. Furthermore, I aim to join a practice group, where I can share my experiences and learn from the experiences of my peers, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented atmosphere

Week 2 Learning to play the Guitar

1. Your name, matric number, date

Name: Emil Kong Dern Yao
Matric No.: A180960
Date: 1 August 2023

2. How is your progress?

I’ve become more familiar and comfortable in playing the scales, whereby previously I would made many mistakes playing it. To help paint a picture, so my Right hand will be focused on plucking the strings, my first and second fingers would need to pluck the strings in an alternate movement. Sounds kind of easy right? But trust me it isn’t. This is because I am not just plucking one string only but three strings! Bear in mind that my Left hand is also in motion, focusing on pressing the strings on the correct fretboard. It’s all so tricky, it’s truly a workout of the mind too.

I’ve also managed to learn a new strumming pattern this week. It’s called a ‘choke’. It’s basically produced when one damps the strings with right hand immediately after strumming the chord. This method is helpful because it helps add to my arsenal of playing style. I’ll be glad to practice this throughout my free time of the week.

3. Points to remember from Week 2!
- Practice, practice, practice. As I’ve learnt more and more, the only way to master the basics and progress further is by practicing.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I feel pumped with the methods that I’ve been learning thus far. I really hope to use my time wisely now to master these skills. But I also got to say that, realistically, practicing during my free time and still not able to progress as fast as I can, can be frustrating at times, but it’s the hope of being a better guitarist that drives me to persevere.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I guess having the right mindset in approaching to learn helps. I’m always reflecting on how I can improve better, where are my weaknesses at, and how identifying them earlier helps progress faster.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
I don’t really have much difficulties and concerns currently. It’s more of my initiative to practice the Guitar. Some days I spend more time practicing, some days lesser. The duration fluctuates. Right now, I’ve included time to practice Guitar into my timetable so that I’m consciously aware of the amount of time that I should be practicing it, which is currently six hours a week.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
I plan to learn more about the various strumming patterns and perhaps also the basics of fingerstyle.

Week 2 The Piano Project

1. Your name, matric number, date
Name: Lee Kong Heng
Matric No: A182323
Date: 4 August 2023

2. How is your progress?
I have completed 3 classes this week, and I'm already completed 50% of the course. I have learned a new song this week entitled "Greensleeves", which is a traditional English folk song. My tutor also prepared piano scales for me to reinforce my technique.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
For this week, I have learned scales, which are C major, G major, D major and F major scales. It's pretty hard, especially when it comes to memorizing the fingers to use and when to change your fingers on a scale. The difficult part is to remember the fingers used in each type of scale as different keys have different fingers to use.

Besides, for this week, my tutor also taught me about Italian musical terms used in songs, such as Allegro is fast, Adagio is slow, Andante is at a walking pace, etc. There are also dynamics markings as well, such as f means you have to play it loud, while p means you have to play it soft.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I felt happy that I finally can recognize the notes better than last week. Furthermore, I felt more confident in playing the piano, although I still made a lot of mistakes (still need a lot of practice hehe).

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I think that not being afraid to make mistakes is something very important because you will learn from your mistakes. Mistakes are the best teachers. One does not learn from success. I believe that only mistakes will make you remember your lessons forever.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
I think the coordination of both hands is the main problem I'm facing right now, especially when it comes to intricate hand movements.

One of the ways suggested by my tutor is to start with one hand and start slow and steady. And then gradually increase the complexity of the pieces as my coordination gradually improves.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
Week 3, maybe another song, probably would ask my tutor to recommend me some jazzy piano songs for me. And also I would also ask my tutor to teach me about genres in music.

How is your progress?

During the second week of working, I can make waffles by myself. I try to make a new filling for the waffle, it is Nutella and blueberry. My customers like it very much. I think I have learned a crunchy waffle by following the exact time. Before this my waffle was not so good. Now I have the confidence to serve waffles to my customers.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Always practice

Follow the timing of cooking very well

4. But by practicing day by day now I have the skill to make waffles. It is true that practice makes you perfect. I feel very happy for the first time I can cook something by myself.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

I learned that if I want to achieve anything I have to learn by hard and practice everyday. I noticed that I really had a talent to make the best waffles. Even though I never made a waffle before this.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

As I mentioned before at point 4, the biggest difficulty is to follow the exact time in order to produce the best waffle. Sometimes it is a bit late, so the taste of the waffle is not the same.

As the new staff, I have to learn to overcome this difficulty. I have to set my watch to produce the best waffle.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

For next week I would like to try the new filling because I already have the idea. Second, I would like to improve my communication with the customer. It is important because the customers are not only from Malaysia but also overseas. There are the tourists from China and Indonesia.

How is your progress?

For week 2, the restaurant was booked by a known courier company for one day and it was filled by 70 people. Before the day of the event, the event was arranged by my supervisor and she forwarded the orders in our Whatsapp group to inform the workers to be prepared for the event. For the preparation, all of us place our order for ingredients which need to be added for the day based on our section. We also decided to give extra dessert services where the kitchen section decided to provide fruits for dessert.

On the day of the event, we were asked to come early to prepare. Because the restaurant will be fully occupied, the kitchen section needs extra hands and I volunteered to help them in the kitchen to prepare the food (plating).

Before the client arrived at the restaurant, there were still other customers who came for food. My supervisor decided to ask us to still take their orders because some of them come from different states to try the foods. Since the client was still not here, all of the other customers were served as usual. To avoid any late services, the online food delivery platform was stopped for a moment.

During the event, there was one staff incharge of the quality control to make sure all drinks, foods and dessert come out on time and to make sure the food presentation is up to standard. The place was crowded and all the clients looked satisfied with the food as some of them ordered a takeaway for the same meal they ordered for the event. The event then ended and the restaurant operated normally.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Working in team makes things easier

Communication is vital in teamwork

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I was overwhelmed and scared incase i made a mistake during the event but one of the workers soothes me and reassures that everything will go as we planned and I just need to follow the flow. At the end of the day, everything went well for both us workers and the client. I was actually amazed at my supervisor, the manager of the restaurant. She was kind enough to still serve other customers before the event started even though the place was preparing for the event.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Multitasked and still did well. I managed to arrange my thoughts to prioritize tasks and did it at the same time. I found it difficult before and it's doable for me now as I used to be so overwhelmed when things started to get tough.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

70 people is a lot and to prepare meals in a small space was difficult because everyone was in the kitchen to help with the preparation. There was a lot of twisting movement to prepare the food so we actually bump into each other multiple times. I decided to just ignore the situation and just do the work as time flies and everyone will be back to their stations.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

I plan to involve more in the front section to communicate more with customers to improve my social skills.

How is your progress?

During week 2, I start to venture into the art of making drinks at the restaurant. I would rate myself 5/10 for a beginner it was kind of amazing to get to learn how to prepare drinks as fast as possible to meet with the customers demand. It was kind of chaotic the first few days but it became better over time.

Besides, I still stick with becoming the waiter during peak hours to meet the customers demand. I usually work for around 4-6 hours starting from 7am. But this is not the normal shift for the workers there. Since I’ll be here for just 1 month so I get to have this special shift hour.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

For week 2 I would say the most important thing that need to be done to get the best drinks is to find the perfect balance between the water concentration, the sugar and the essence of the drinks. Next, it’s important to manage time wisely to get a maximal amount of output at certain period of time.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

For week 2 I felt a bit exhausted with the workload. But over time I kind of enjoying the work and the process throughout the week. I still believed I need a lot of practise because I need to catch up even faster with the customers demand.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

I learned that practise makes perfect so I need to work hard and make sure the work that I do is as perfect as it can be to give the best satisfaction to the customers or in the hospital settings the patients.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The difficulties for this week I’ll say language barrier, as my skin is kind of dark most of the Indian customers tend to speak Tamil with me but my Tamil is not so good. Thus to cope with this uneventful event I’ll try to say sorry and speak in either Malay or English.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

For week 3 I plan to work on making the dishes and try to juggle between making drinks and prepare food.

How is your progress?

As of week 2, I worked on lower body movement. To get upper and lower body movement in sync, I practiced hitting 100 balls at the range. The lower body plays a crucial role for producing strength and stability throughout the golf swing. Longer drives and consistent ball-striking are the results of proper lower body mobility, which transfers energy from the ground through the body to the club. At the end of week 2, I learnt new techniques such as hip rotation, weight shift and good posture

3. Points to remember from week 2!

- A smooth and consistent tempo and rhythm can help maintain balance and prevent swaying

- Hips should be openly rotated toward the target during impact, and most of the weight should be on the front foot.

4. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

Stiff hands and back pain are the recurring problems for the past two weeks. The flaws in trajectory of the ball after the impact are caused by the excessive grip pressure and incorrect body movement.
Playing the Ukulele: A Simple Song

1. Your name, matric number, date
Ahmad Saqif Nazib
A180985
6th August 2023

2. How is your progress?
By week 2, I have mastered some simple chords as well as notes. Daily, I would simply be practicing some simple fingerstyle and the chords. After being able to play twinkle twinkle little star, Mr Jason, my instructor, decided for me to learn a pop song. Its called I'm yours. It wasn't just learning the song, he also taught me strumming patterns. It was a bit hard and my fingers were killing me but I got used to it. The highlight of week 2 was strumming patterns and being able to play while singing or simple to say synchronizing my voice and my melody.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
a. Strumming patterns can be modified to my needs. Mastering strumming patterns means that I know the beat and rhythm of the song.
b. Try to synchronize singing and playing. Play along the music the ensure that the tempo I play is correct
c. Practice makes perfect!

4. Your feelings & thoughts
Learning a legit known song feels exciting a first. But once I observed how Mr. Jason played the ukulele, it was no easy job. I felt a bit awkward at first because, this time, the song was more fast paced and it uses chords instead of notes. unlike my twinkle twinkle little star song.

As for strumming patterns, i thought my fingers could handle it but it turned out, i couldn't. I felt a bit irritated having the repeat the same strumming pattern but I understood that i can help with my rhythm.

I felt a bit shy to sing along with the song, but slowly I opened up my voice and started to sing. My strumming and transition between different chords weren't that smooth so i need to practice more.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
If something is impossible for me, just do it multiple times. Muscle memory does wonders. Doing a routine CDEFGAB on my ukulele also helps with my coordination

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Again, my concern was not being able to master this song in a week and my fingers were hurting, but it hurt less. Though looking back, I've actually come close to making this song perfect. As for my twinkle twinkle little star, ive actually mastered the song and played it smoothly. Hence, I trust the process and going to continue practicing my I'm Yours by Jason Mraz. My fingers will start to not hurt the more i practice.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
Mr. Jason plans to watch me play next week, and assess my capabilities. Only the, we will proceed to learn so classic songs. In which i will combine solo fingerstyle and some chords.

Your feelings & thoughts
Over these two weeks, I have noticed an improvement in your finger dexterity and coordination. Playing chords requires my fingers to move independently, which can be challenging for beginners.

I have gained a basic understanding of concepts like the names of the strings, the parts of the guitar, and how to read chord diagrams. I started to have established a practice routine that includes warm-up exercises, chord changes, strumming practice, and perhaps a bit of fingerpicking.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

I attempted to play some simple songs that involve the chords I have learned and basic strumming patterns.

Name: Nur Fittrah Balqees binti Azman

Matrics Number: A175183

Date: 7th – 13th August 2023

2. How is your progress?

I started this week by taking orders and restock some ingredients on Monday. Then, I started to bake as I received few orders from my close friends on Instagram. It was quite hectic on the first few days because I’ve never made more than 2 cakes a day previously. So, I had to manage my time wisely so that I can
deliver the cake on time. After few days, I contacted my customers again and asked for their feedback so that I can improve on parts where I am lacking.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

- Baking require lots of patience and good time management to maintain the quality of product.

- Always ask for customers’ feedback because there’s always a room for improvement.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

Its feel like a dream comes true to see my small business grow from zero order to 5 orders a week. Even though it is just a small number of orders but I feel very grateful and honoured when people are willing to spend their money to buy cakes from me.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

I learnt that constructive criticism is very important for us to make improvement. This is because nothing is perfect so we have to accept it and appreciate all the feedbacks that were given by the customers.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

Initially, I’ve encountered difficulties in managing my time especially when I received more than 2 orders a day.
