I used light to show the image of the airplane on the wall. I used the concept of time by using clothes, luggage, and an airplane to show time spent traveling. Using the light of the sun, different layers of paper create a beautiful image that changes in color and visibility as time passes. I took various photos of these shapes at various times of day using natural light and artificial light. For this project, I created a living sculpture out of paper strands.  I cut different length pieces and wrinkled them to create an organic shape out of the medium.  I attached the paper onto cardboard pallet corner protectors and adhered them to the corner of my ceiling.  I put a light bulb in the corner and used a hot glue gun to then add the pieces of paper bit by bit until it became the form i wanted.

The form was inspired by photos of wasps nests that grow in houses.  I wanted to create an organic form or a growth of something that added to the space but was also out of place at first glance.  I find the ability of wasps to build where they want fascinating and went with that idea as i added pieces on, thinking about how i started from a bare light-bulb and how i thought the form would grow in the space.  

The concept i was going for was to bring attention to an overlooked space in my house that is too close to my porch door to put anything there.  

The addition of the light is to show passage of time, maybe something living in the sculpture or the growth itself breathing and living.  I messed around with my smart light settings to create a program of pulsing light that changes hue and brightness to bring attraction to the piece.  I often find myself staring at nature and animal made structures trying to figure out the "how" and "why", but often i dont find an answer.  Nature does however draw me in and keep me looking and exploring the objects in wonderment and i hope i did the same with my sculpture.  

The last aspect wasnt part of the rubric but i felt was needed, and that is the music.  I made the beat on my computer and thought it added the feeling i have when surrounded by or looking lost in the beauty of natural objects and while in nature. 

When the project came together i named it "Emergence" because at this time of year i start to feel different, as the warm weather rolls in and more socializing happens.  Usually in the winter i spend more time inside but especially due to the pandemic i have spent more time at home for various reasons.  After watching my project in my house the past few nights it has felt like the outside world is reaching into my apartment reminding me of the world beyond the squared off walls that i have spent so much time in these past few months.
