Egyptians Mummifying

A huge part of Egyptian religion was mummification. The Egyptians believed that once they had died they would go to the afterlife. They believed that they would need certain body parts in the afterlife so once the person died they would mummify them. They would do this by removing the body parts and reserving them in jars. They would remove the brain through the nose with a hook. Then they would take out the lungs, liver, intestines and the stomach. They left the heart because it was believed to guide the spirit to the afterlife. Soon the body was wrapped in linen bandages and was placed in a wooden case (or stone sarcophagus if you were wealthy). They were also buried with items they may need for the after life such as jewelry, furniture and sometimes even mummified pets. In this picture a person is being mummified.

The Egyptian's religion also involved many rituals. There was a ritual for almost everything. They had rituals for the priests, the Pharaoh, new temples, daily rituals, foundation rituals etc. Some were purifying rituals (preformed by priests) to prove that they were pure and worthy. Daily rituals were where they would wash, clothe and perfume statues of the Gods. Most of them were in honor of the gods. They would also sacrifice in some rituals. The rituals were in purpose of pleasing and respecting the gods. This is a picture of the Egyptians doing one of their rituals.

The Egyptians believed in many religious myths. This picture is from the myth THE DESTRUCTION OF MANKIND. In this myth the Egyptians tease the God Ra because he is aging. To punish them he sent the Eye of Ra (in the from of his daughter, Hathor who took form as a lioness). She killed and drank the blood of men and went on a rampage. Ra felt bad and stopped her by mixing a red pigment and beer and tricking her to think it was blood. She became more aware and stopped. The picture is of Hathor as a lioness.

The Egyptians built many temples for their gods. They would build these in honor of them and they would be a place to worship the gods. The temples were like a home to the gods and goddesses. They were a place of residence and shelter for them. They were built with huge, strong stone so that they would last forever. The Egyptians put a lot of effort and time into building them. They were usually built by slaves and unskilled workers. Once a temple was finished there would be a ritual preformed by the Pharaoh.
