I have personally encourntered this in several arenas in my life.  Most recently I spent hours trying to locate a counselor who specializes in adolescent to help my thirteen year old daughter with her anxiety.

I've also encountered this with my husband and other veterans who have sought assistance in developing tools to assist with the treatment of their combat related PTSD.  The lack of resource to help our veterans is what drove me to counseling.

I feel my own experiences with my husband and his PTSD treatment along with being a veteran myself would help me to empathize with others going through similar experiences.

This module was a great refresher to some of the DSM-5 disorders that I have studied in prior classes.  What I particularly found helpful was all the resources that are available for each of the disorders.  The internet has brought its share of challenges, especially if you are a youth being raised in the world of social media, but this is one arena where the vast amount of information is truly helpful.  Being able to at the tap of a button locate vast amounts of research and resources has really helped to grow the field of mental health.

     This topic was helpful to me as I am dealing with my own trauma of having recently loosing my mother during this course.   It was helpful to read and learn about the many different ways trauma can impact us and how each individual can have very different reactions in regards to how they process trauma.  I really enjoyed watching my chosen documentary Resurface (Short 2017).  Incorporating water sports into the treatment of PTSD is something that resonates with me.  I would like to learn more about nature and water therapy.  I am interested in how I can incorporate into my treatment plans as a therapist.

When working with service members who have experienced trauma it is important to take into consideration their background and beliefs. The next step in the model is to understand the problem.  Being able to understand what your client has gone through and how it has impacted them is important. Using empathy statements can be helpful.
