Carry That Weight, Protest Project by Emma Sulkowicz

https://youtu.be/REZKo4lFvy4
Carry That Weight is a performance art piece created by Columbia University student Emma Sulkowicz in 2014, following a sexual assault that she endured at the hands of a fellow student. As part of her senior art thesis, Sulkowicz intended the project to bring awareness to the rape culture and lack of accountability for sexual assault present on campus. For her project Emma carried a 50lb mattress, the same kind used in the student dorms, on her back everywhere she went from September until the end of the following spring semester. She vowed that she would carry it until her alleged rapist was either expelled or left the University.

After watching this video and hearing Emma’s story, take a moment to consider the ways in which women are constantly “carrying the weight” of harm management and the threat of violence throughout their lives. Then, answer the questions below.

Female-Identified Persons:

1. Name three or more ways that you “carry the weight” in your own lives. What are three things that you do in your day-to-day life to manage harm.

2. Name the first three things that you would do if you did not have to actively manage the threat of harm. I’ll go first: take a walk alone at night, travel by myself, dress however I want without worrying about soliciting unwanted comments or attention.

Male-Identified Persons:

1. Name three or more ways that you’ve seen women carrying the weight or managing harm. This can be friends, family, or just observations you may have made while out in the world.

2. Can you name a few ways in which you might not have realized that women manage harm?

Non-Binary Identified Persons

1. Answer the questions to either or both prompts, or describe three or more ways in which, as someone who identifies as non-binary, you may have yourself had to carry the weight or manage harm.

Commodifying Female Violence: Pepper Spray Ad Campaigns

All three of these images are advertisements for pepper spray, and all three of them feature photographs of women or photographs of women being threatened in some way by a man. The slogans reference, “protecting yourself before it’s too late,” or daring someone to, “tease, touch or letch.” The harm and harassment endured by women is so prevalent and common-place that entire marketing campaigns have been built around it. Also, note the messaging in the DARE pepper spray ad that states, “Your Safety. Your Responsibility.”

This article from Runner’s World describes the long and complex mental checklist that more than half of all female runner’s report having to asses before heading out to participate in an activity that many of us take for granted. Some of the considerations that women face when lacing up for a run include time of day and remaining daylight, how remote their running location might be, who they should inform of their running route in the event that they don’t return, and how often they need to change up that running route in case someone dangerous may have memorized it.
