What do I KNOW about KWL?

I KNOW that KWL is a 3-part discussion chart that is used to 1) gather and document one's prior knowledge of a particular topic/subject matter, then 2) asks what the person would like to know/questions to further their knowledge on the subject, and 3) finally to state what the person has learned during the curriculum study through lessons and activities.

I want to know what is the best way to begin/administer a KWL discussion chart. Is the best time to have the discussion(s) during the first week/first day of the new curriculum (Exploring the Topic)? If I was to administer a KWL discussion chart during small group, what would be the best way to proceed? All open/shared discussion? Incorporate a read-aloud? Have the children hold something tangible that is related to the curriculum study while having the discussion? Can I record the discussion with my phone so that I am able to interact with the children more? Or must I write down the children's responses as they are given?

From reading the article, I learned that by using the KWL charts I can gain a better understanding of how well each child understands new information. "Are they retaining what is being taught?" "Are they listening? Am I presenting the information in a way that is interesting to them and makes them want to learn more?"

I also learned that for topics that the students might not have much prior knowledge about (recycling, clothes, music, water, etc.), it is best to initiate the K(now) during large group and the W(ant) during a small group activity. For a class like mine, I would initiate the L(earned) either the next day--before the end of the week--during another small group activity.

Also are there other ways for teacher to get support with KWL to make sure it is being implement with the students properly.

After reading, I learned that KWL charts do more than just organize information they help students take ownership of their learning by actively participating in discussions and setting learning goals. I also discovered that there are expanded versions of the KWL chart, like the KWHLAQ and KWLSIFR charts, which add More in depth reflection, real-world application, and research skills to the learning process.
