Garuso Ball is played on a standard soccer field which the majority of post primary PE departments have access to. However it can also be adapted to fit a standard Gaa field if this is available to schools.
It ideally consists of a 12 a side game although this is again adaptable depending on class sizes and availability of a suitable playing area. The teams will line out as shown below in the playing area.
There is a semi-circular are around the goal in which the keepers can not be tackled in.

Below are the set of rules I believe are suitable for this game in a post-primary school physical education setting.
- The game begins played with a soccer ball and is then changed after every score.
- Rugby tackles are allowed at all times of the game but only between the area below waist and above the ankle.
- Soccer slide tackles are only allowed when a Gaelic football or soccer ball is in play and the ball is on the ground.
- The goal keeper cannot be tackled inside the semi circle.
- Students are allowed to pass the ball by either kicking, Hand-passing or throwing regardless of the ball in play.
- In a Co-Educational setting boys must only tackle boys and girls tackle girls but the play itself is mixed.
- Students are allowed 4 steps before they must then play a hop or a solo.
- If the ball goes wide of the scoring zone after hitting of the defending team, either a soccer corner kick, rugby conversion or a Gaa 45 is then taken.
- If the ball goes out at either sideline, again depending on the respect ball in play at the time, either a soccer throw in, a Gaelic sideline kick or a non-lifting rugby line out will occur.

Why should Garuso Ball be included in a co-education physical education program?

I believe that this game is justified to be included in the program for post-primary schools physical education as according to the junior cycle short course for physical education:
" Physical education can provide all students with enjoyable and worthwhile learning opportunities where they develop the movement skills and competencies to participate and perform in a variety of physical activities competently, confidently and safely . " (NCCA, 2016)

Garuso Ball most certainly meets the above criteria as within one game game they are learning the skills and movements necessary to participate in four other different games. This game can be thoroughly enjoyable and at the same time be incredibly beneficial for the development and progression of a variety of fundamental movement skills .
"Fundamental movement skills are movement patterns that involve various body parts and provide the basis of physical literacy" (www.Humankinetics.com )
Within this one game, all of the below fundamental movement skills are being addressed:
1- Catch
2- Kick
3- Run
4- Jump
5- Punt
6- Dodge
7- Overhead Throw
8- Ball bounce
This can only be advantageous for students to be exposed to such a wide variety of movements in one game.
As well as movements skills, Garuso Ball will also develop the students cognitive skills within different game situations as the type of pass or movement they use will change depending on the ball used.
