         <title>What is Autism?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Autism is a developmental disorder that has a range of characteristics thus Autism SPECTRUM disorder. The word Autism comes from the greek work autos meaning self. For some individuals with ASD they are to themselves, mostly concentrate on thesmselves, and it can be hard to recognize others feelings and emotions. <br><br><br><br><br><br>Some of the skill deficits encountered with Autism can be, but not limited to: </div><ol><li>Social Development:<ul><li>Not making eye contact </li><li>Not responsive to sharing</li><li>Does not respond to name </li><li>Monotone voice</li><li>Dislike change in routine </li></ul></li><li>Linguistic Development:<ul><li>Unable to verbalize needs and wants </li><li>Difficulty expressing feelings</li></ul></li><li>Restricted Interests:<ul><li>Repetitive behaviors</li><li>Repetitive Statements (Echolalia) </li><li>Perseveration on certain topics </li></ul></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>Have student closest to the teacher in the front row so other students do not distract them</li><li>Have pencil grips for those who struggle with holding pencils due to motor deficits</li><li>Dim lights if possible for those who may have sensory overload </li><li>Allow headphones and let class be aware that loud noises can disturb students with ASD</li><li>Allow breaks so student may move around and not get anxious trying to be stationary</li><li>Have visual schedules so they can prepare themselves for what is to come</li><li>Wiggle seat to allow movement and pressure when sitting </li><li>Resistance bands around desk to allow legs to "fidget" when sitting</li><li>Weighted vests can sometimes be preferred if they like pressure/contact</li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>Some Families have found that ABA therapy can be useful to help with communication and social skills. Some clinics in the Houston Area are:<ul><li>Including Kids </li><li>The Shape of Behavior</li><li>Spectacular Kids</li><li>Tangible Difference</li></ul></li><li>Speech, Occupational, and Physical therapy have also been helpful for students with ASD</li><li>There are also some alternative methods such as equestrian therapy, music therapy, Sailing and many more. </li><li>If you are looking for a private school just for kids with ASD then there are a couple in Houston such as:<ul><li>The Monarch School</li><li>Avondale House</li><li>The Westview School</li><li>The Parish School  </li></ul></li><li>There are also organizations that help to fund these therapies and schools for students with ASD<ul><li><a href="http://www.thrivebehavioralservices.com/grants.html">http://www.thrivebehavioralservices.com/grants.html</a></li></ul></li></ol>]]></description>
