Cultural Differences

Often times at conferences parents just want to know how their child is doing in school. They are curious about their grades and attitude. I always ask parents when we meet, “What does your child think about first grade?” It is really eye opening what the parents have to say. I loved the idea to ask parents to share cultural differences. It will be really neat to learn about the different families.

Mixed Age and Mixed Grade
After doing the class birthday chart I was amazed to see the vast range of ages in my class. In my first grade class I have 5, 6 and 7 year olds. What amazes me is that some of the younger students have a larger attention span and are more self-sufficient then the older students. It would be a great experience to mix the class by development abilities instead of by school age.

Exercise

I have felt that our school day goes too quickly and that we often rush from subject to subject. I feel that the students look as disheveled at the end as the day as I do. Some days we don’t even have the time left for outdoor recess. I thought the sentence on page 17 was very interesting; “In fact, many discipline problems in school can be traced directly to the lack of physical activity.” What are we doing to our youth? Some of my friends work for business that have gyms within the building and daily exercise is encouraged. If adults are being encouraged to exercise then why are the education standards so rigid that kids don’t have time to play?
