Meanwhile in Laman's house things are only getting worse and Frank hears Angela and Laman having sex . 
Frank has forgotten to empty the chamber pots and Lamen is drunk so he doesn't let Frank borrow his bike anymore . They both end up getting into a argument and Frank leaves for good after everyone is asleep and moves in with Uncle Pat.

One day, Fintan Slattery wins the apple peel but decides to share it with his friends, Frank, Paddy, and Question Quigley. Several days later Fintan invites Frank and Paddy over for lunch. Fintan ends up eating in front of Frank and Paddy and doesn't share. Frank and Paddy then decide to skip class and run away into the fields to eat apples and drink milk. On their way back, they run into a schoolmate that tells Frank his parents are looking for him. He decides that going to Paddy's house is the best option. When Angela shows up to Paddy's house, she recognizes that she knows his father, Mr. Clohessy. This chapter ends with Angela singing Mr. Clohessy a song. 
Example of irony: The McCourts had very little money because of Malachy Sr. drinking away all of it. This is ironic because they asked the charity from the church and got the doors slammed in their faces. The government had them on the dole and they still ended up in misery. It's always a reoccurring issue that the family has trouble with. As we read the book, Franks family has trouble affording food to provide. Frank has to steal food and lick crumbs off of a newspaper to survive.

One element of humor in the book would have to be when Frank tried to baptize a dead lady with alcohol, he thought she was damned to hell and he was drunk and thought that the only way to save her soul from going to hell was by baptizing her. He had no holy water so he used his drink... Frank is a child who's father was a drunk and left him and his family when he was like 6. As Frank grew up he met some challenges but over came them with some faith and love. His father, Malachy Sr. was the alcoholic and he would spend all his money that was supposed to be for the family on alcohol. Once he got a job in England, he wouldn't send any telegrams and only came to visit once for Christmas. After Frank goes to work for the Post Office he delivers a telegram to Mrs. Clohessy's house and he notices all the new furniture, bright clothes and good food. Franks gets his wages, the first pound he ever got he ever got at that job he spent on his brother because he was hungry, his brother asks for a piece of bread. Frank takes Malachy Jr. to get fish and chips and lemonade, then to a movie and ate chocolate, and then out for tea and buns. After this Frank believes that he should stop spending the money and instead save it  to move back to america
One day when Frank got another telegram and it was addressed to the Carmody residence and he was told he was lucky to get it because they have a daughter who is 17 and is dying of consumption and there is a "legend" that if a girl is dying she will be "dying" for love. When Frank arrived he crashed and was bleeding all over and when he rang the bell their daughter Theresa answered and she said to come in and get cleaned up. Frank the sleeps with Theresa. Frank came back everyday until one day when Theresa didn't answer the door but her mother did wearing black meaning Theresa was dead, Frank was heart broken because Theresa was his first and only love. Frank didn't even notice that she was dying of consumption and it is very contagious and having sex before marriage is sentence able to hell and he believed he was the reason why. Everything seems to be looking up for the McCourt family until Uncle Pat fires Frank cause he can find someone else who is cheaper to pay. Then in July they have another baby named Alphonsus (Alphie for short) because of this new born baby Malachy Sr.'s father send them 5 pounds of shillings which Malachy spent in the pub. Angela sent Frank and Micheal. to find Malachy Sr. and embarrass him but Frank couldn't push himself to do it.
