In simpler terms, the 13th amendment states that slavery and involuntary servitude shall not exist within the United States, except when deemed as an appropriate punishment. 

The 14th amendment prevents states from depriving citizens of their right to life, liberty, or property without due process of law. The rest of the 14th amendment focuses on the rights of the government and isn't as majorly momentous as Section 1.

However after winning a few elections in southern states those changes were reversed by white supremacy groups in less than a decade. Besides being required to uphold the abolition of slavery, southern governments were given the ability to rebuild themselves. The federal government also had no right to determine voting requirements at the state level. Congress passed multiple bills to help formerly enslaved people but were vetoed by president Andrew Johnson. In a period called the Radical Reconstruction, blacks in America were given many rights for the first time. These included the right to vote, and official citizenship. Due to this newfound involvement, groups supporting blacks in government sprouted up. During this period 2,000 African Americans served in political offices, both in the north and south. Some specific black figures who rose up in the government are Hiram Revels, Robert Elliott, and Joseph Rainey. The north helped fund the establishments by creating the Freedman's Bureau, which would provide overall infrastructure for the new educational system. This system was temporarily halted however in 1870 with the shutdown of the Freedman's Bureau. As well as this, African Americans would not be allowed to go into higher education until the founding of Georgia State Industrial College. Tenancy farming proved to be an effective method as many African Americans did not have the financial support or knowledge of tending one's own farm. The tenancy ladder also helped support tenant farming as it allowed some farmers to gradually earn more and more, if they had enough money. Specifically they didn't like the racial change and started to challenge local republican leaders. They didn't like African Americans challenging white authority. Union Leagues were established to help black men register to vote, some were specifically to vote republican. Union Leagues and other similar organizations gained republicans many votes in elections during reconstrutions. White supremacist groups such as the KKK would target republican leaders and black people, killing at the very least 35 black officials. With the abolition of slavery, many formerly enslaved people resorted to sharecropping, leaving many people in immense debt to land owners. Although the sharecropper could become a planter or land owner themseves, many fell into debt due to declining cotton prices, poor managment, and exhaustion of the soil, keeping many people in some form of seritude.
