Dealing with depression

The book starts off on a depressing note with the quote "It was a pleasure to burn" (Bradbury 1). This quote sets the off the story darkly and sets the tone for the story. The fire that is set to burn down houses symbolizes setting Montags soul on fire. With every house Montag burns he goes slightly crazier and becomes more insane. Another quote that relates to how people dealing with depression may feel is on page 115. The quote says " He thought you're a fool, a damn fool, an awful fool, an idiot, an awful idiot, a damn idiot, and a fool, damn fool" (Bradbury 115). This quote just displays what Montag deals with he is blaming himself and just sees himself as a fool which is how many who struggle with depression feel. Another symbol in the story is the Phoenix. A Phoenix is a bird from Greek Mythology that continues to be reborn. The Phoenix symbolizes moving on and putting the past behind you. A lot of this story revolves around that idea such as Montag moving on from being a fire fighter. Another example would be Montag having to move on from losing Clarisse.

Losing Sanity

In the story it is very apperent that Montag is losing his sanity. Throughout the story Montag goes through many events such as losing people he loves. He is also forced to complete actions he doesn't want to do. An example is on page 39 where Montag comes home and passes out. The page reads, "He made more soft sounds. He stumbled toward the bed and shoved the book clumsily under the pillow. He fell into the bed and his wife cried out" (Bradbury 39). This is unlike Montag and it causes him to freak out and worry about Millie. The dandelion on page 41 symbolizes emptiness to Montag. Montag states, "How do you get so empty," "Who takes it out of you? And that awful flowwer the other day, the dandelion! It had summed up everything hadn't it?" (Bradbury 41). The realization of this to Montag is hard to swallow knowing how empty Millie is inside and knowing she can't remember where they meant and it hurts him inside. The music on page 42 symbolize how one may feel inside. When the storm ends and everyone was exhausted the book says that the music died. When the emotions are being explained it is said that they "drowned in the music."

Research #1 Depression

Did you know that "An estimated 2 million Americans suffer from severe depression" (Berger 46). Depression is a fairly common issue amongst Americans yet its an issue we are afraid to discuss. Many people are afraid to talk about depression as it is a sensitive subject, but many people deal with it. Celebrities who speak on their battles are often admired for the courage it takes to speak on it. One of these celebrities is Scott Mescudi better known as the rapper Kid Cudi. Comedian Pete Davidson was doing a radio interview when he was quoted saying "He saved my life. I would’ve killed myself if I didn’t have Kid Cudi. If you’re 25 and under, I truly believe that Kid Cudi saved your life." (Images, NBC/Getty) This quote shows the power that one person alone speaking on this matter can help someone who struggles with it. Depression and mental illnesses are things people are afraid to acknowledge as told by mentalhealthamerica.net "You may find yourself denying the warning signs, worrying what other people will think because of the stigma," (Mental Illness and the Family). This is one of the biggest problems with mental illness is being afraid to confront it. Once one knows they struggle with it and aren't afraid to talk about it is when they can seek help. Many people just need the support from family and friends to fight it.

Research #3 Talking about Mental Illness

Many people struggle just to realize they have a mental illness. Some people will know they have it and just will not try to fix it. Many times it may help just to talk to people you love and speak on the issues the person is struggling with. A quote from mentalhealthamerica.net speaks on this struggle by telling us "Most families are not prepared to cope with learning their loved one has a mental illness. It can be physically and emotionally trying, and can make us feel vulnerable to the opinions and judgments of others." (Mental Illness and the Family). This quote further proves the earlier statements in this paragraph. Research has also showed that your background may also change your willingness to talk about your mental illness. This is based on a research done by social psychiatrists and what they found is summed up in this quote. "Thus, the history of social psychiatry teaches us that cultural conceptions of mental illness have dramatic consequences for help seeking, stereotyping, and the kinds of treatment structures we create for people with mental illnesses." (Public). People are scared to talk about their illnesses which is why sites like PsyCom.net exist there are test for people to take to determine if they have these illnesses. Sites like this make sure to tell you the tests are anonymous as people don't want to be identified this particular site states "Each screening test is designed to provide anonymous and immediate feedback," (Mental). These tests are not as accurate as actually going to a doctor and talking about your struggles, but people are afraid to talk about it. This is a major issue and if you struggle with these issues it is highly recommended to talk to a professional.

Research #2 How to identify a mental illness

Many people who struggle with mental illnesses don't even think it is anything serious. They may even struggle heavily with it and it is terrible, but they don't think anything of it. They often think that it's just common emotions. Mental illness is described by Mayoclinic.org as "Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. Many people have mental health concerns from time to time. But a mental health concern becomes a mental illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function." (Mental Illness). This quote tells us what is considered a mental illness and some examples. Many people now also think that excessive violence and/or anger is a mental illness and even those who don't believe that think it is something that needs to be treated. Slate.com is a website that doesn't believe it's an illness, but needs to be treated they are quoted talking about mass shootings, "They have a chronic pattern of failure to modulate their aggressive feelings. Violent crimes are committed by violent people, almost always men who are lonely, isolated, blame others for their problems, and lack the skills to manage their anger." (Hayes, Laura L). Other websites such as the Washington post disagree that violence isn't a mental illness. A quote from their article says "Yet too often, mental-health advocates hide behind the platitude that the mentally ill are no more violent than others. That may be true for those being properly treated for their illness, but it is not true for the untreated, including those suffering from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder." (Jaffe). This quote shows how some people do agree that mental illness can affect other aspects of life such as violence or anger.

Montag has to go through a lot of suffering in this story. He has to deal with losing people that he deeply cares about. He sacrifces so much and it takes a toll on him. We can see his pain and thoughts on page 149. Montag says "My wife, my wife. Poor Millie, poor poor Millie. I can't remember anything. I think of her hands but I don't see them doing anything at all. They just hang there at her sides or they lie there on her lap or there's a cigarette in them, but that's all." (Bradbury 149). This quote shows how Montag thinks about Millie and reveals how much he misses her. The quote relates to the symbol which is the cigarette Millie is holding. This cigarette represents addiction. To have Montag think of Millie holding a cigarette it reveals she must have smoked a lot for that to be something major Montag remembers. The next quote reveals all that Montag has had to go through in the story. On pages 124 and 125 Montag says "How many times can a man go down and still be alive? I can't breathe. There's Beatty dead, and he was my friend once, and there's Millie gone, i thought she was my wife, but now I don't know. And the house all burnt. And my job gone and myself on the run, and I planted a book in a fireman's house on the way. Good Christ, the things I've done in a single week!" (Bradbury 124, 125). This quote tells us what Montag has dealt with in a short period of time. The quote has an emotional feeling that shows us how the events have also taken a toll on him. The final symbol is the Bible that Montag finds. The Bible represents all Montag has left to believe in and what keeps him going. The Bible is a special book and Montag is one of the only people to have one in the book and it shows how much he needed it.
