Winston Smith is a 39 year old out of shape man who does not associate with others, so you could call him a loner. He has an ulcer above his right ankle, wears blue overalls which is a symbol for the Party, and looks skinny and frail. His hair is somewhat fair.

He writes down what he feels in a journal, but by doing this he is already against the government because keeping one is considered an illegal act.

Winston is limited in his speech as there are telescreens and hidden microphones in most parts. He is very careful in what he says because if he says something that is against the government, then the Thought Police, who is in charge of capturing people who express ideas against the Party, will come and get him. The only time he spoke freely is when the telescreen was turned off when he was speaking to O'Brien.

Winston writes down what he thinks in his journal. This is the only place in which he is able to express his true thoughts. He tells Julia, his lover, what he thinks about her and what he thinks about the Party. He expresses his thoughts also to O'Brien, a man a part of the Inner Party who Winston thinks is a rebel also. This proves to be a big mistake as O'Brien is loyal to the Party and tortures Winston.

Winston Smith was a dynamic character from the beginning of the novel until the end of it. He starts off following his party, but he had his suspicions. He states that he hates this specific girl, but then he loves her. Then all of a sudden he decides to be a rebel and go against his party. Towards the end he changes again because he gets brainwashed into loving the Party.

Winston Smith has many traits, but his most important one is his intelligence. He is able to produce his own thoughts and wonders what the past might have been like. He helps develop the theme that totalitarianism can never be good. Winston gets the feeling that there is a chance of rebellion if everyone unites. The overall message was to use unity to take down whats bad.
