In the beginning of the novel it seems as if Marlow represents the light throughout, he spreads his knowledge amongst the others and has somewhat different perspectives than the others. But over time he spends more and more time in the darkness of jungle and is surrounded by evil and death, it seems like his time spent is slowly turning him into the darkness all by external influences. And if the main source of light become consumed by darkness, then where are they supposed to gain the light again? Also, if there’s no light, then how can they establish something good from bad? Vice Versa if there’s no darkness? How can one establish the difference between anything at all without opposites?
- Julia Rumb

- How do different aspects of nature, more specifically the river and the jungle, become their own characters?
- What is nature's attitude towards man?
somewhat annoyed indifference?
- If nature can induce madness, what does this say about human nature, especially the native Africans who live there ?
GREAT question. What do you think about it inducing madness in people who have drifted too far away from it?
-Brittney Powers

Julia’s comment
(Very interesting question in terms of the river and jungle becoming their own character, I think that the power of each is so prominent that it has the ability to become its own character...
