I will share pieces of writing that I have written (grade appropriate), and explain to them why I love to write. I will ask them to brainstorm goals for themselves as writers during the school year, and encourage them to pick up a pencil and write when they get a free chance. I will introduce to them the Writer's Corner and how it works, and introduce their writing journals. I want the students to keep a journal to write in daily. I still have my writing journals from as young as kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade. I will explain to my students that I trust them to conference with one another during writing time, because two heads are better than one, and often times our friends can give us great ideas to write about, and to help us when we are stuck. I will ask students to create a box of things  that represent the things in life that they love and are passionate about.  This will be an assignment the first week of school.  They can add to it throughout the school year as they please, and this will be their "Writing Inspiration Box."  I will make one as well!

Students will be encouraged to use their passions and hobbies to develop creative writing. In an interview with one of my students this semester, he told me that he gets his ideas for writing from things he loves in real life, such as football. This student also told me he loves writing. I want students to be excited about writing, and be excited to find out
what they love about writing and their writing strengths, and what they need to work harder on. We will work on various writing prompts throughout the year, that can be created by the students. I will have students write about 5 prompts on the first week of school, and we will cut these up and place them into our fish bowl. Each time there is a new prompt to write about, I will choose a student to "fish for a prompt!"
I want students to become excited and passionate about writing, and they can do this by discovering who they are as writers, and not to be intimidated by writing.   We are all in this together! I vividly remember my teacher allowing us to bring in pictures of us and things we love to decorate our journals.
