Afghanistan's past is rough. First in the early 1980's the country went to war with Russia. Eventually Russia moved out of the country but a new force had rose to power, the Taliban. The Taliban was a radical Islamic group who ruled Afghanistan with an iron fist. First they limited women's presence in culture and made them almost nonexistent. The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against New York caused the United States to get involved with the problem in Afghanistan. But soon after in 2002 the Taliban was defeated by the combined efforts of the US forces and Afghani rebels. Afterwards Afghanistan returned to normal, daily life.
