Before the mid-nineteenth century, marketable goods had to be made in the home. When demand became too high for it to be met by this way, factories emerged. The first industry in the north was the textile industry. The assembly line present in factories was very fast, and made it so that lots of cheap labor was required. This changed the a social aspect in the North because more people had to be hired, but their job was very easy and required little training so they could easily be fired and replaced.
